15 years ago today, an EF5 tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri. This radar image shows the massive debris ball as the tornado moved directly through the city, killing 158 people and becoming one of the deadliest tornadoes in modern US history.
Joplin changed the weather world forever, exposing major issues with how tornado warnings were handled at the time, including warning lead times, false alarms, and warning fatigue. In the years that followed, it sparked major discussions about how forecasting and warning communication could improve to better protect lives. Since then, the weather world has evolved significantly, from warnings being pushed directly to mobile devices to coverage like ours providing realtime weather updates across social media platforms.
@BradArnoldWX@ReedTimmerUSA That's weird because my first thought yesterday when I saw both of you chasing the same storm was that it was going to be a good one. You both have awesome instincts! So I knew it was going to be a good tornado, and you were both in the right spot!
This is certainly a day to save radar loops and weather observations from the Deep South - we're witnessing an incredibly rare historic event right now.
Snowstorms like this don't come often at all - in fact, only a few since the late 1800s.
@LilAioli It definitely isn't based on racism, but there are super horrible Swifties who think this way. Most Swifties are absolutely INSANE (I was part of an eras tour GC and was kicked out of it💀). And I know for a fact there are MAGA Swifties because there was one in the GC
@VinceWaelti@ReedTimmerUSA@SimonStormRider This isn't amusing, I get notifications from you guys to follow the weather, not for a string of fighting. I love all you guys, especially Reed, but man, this is getting old now
@VinceWaelti@ReedTimmerUSA@SimonStormRider I've been following storm chasers in one way or another for over 20 years now, and I really just dont understand the bickering you guys do to each other on here. It's either one big joke that im missing out on, or you guys are just this petty. I dont get it..
