I'm so excited to share my first ukulele tutorial ever! Was I a fan of singing to the internet at first? No, but I did surprise myself by how it turned out. Friendly comments totally boosted my confidence a bit too. Click the link to check it out! #STPRF21 https://t.co/JKC8MVf71r
@mrnesi Today at Starbucks, the car in front of us in the drive-thru paid for our order. We bought three drinks. They also gave the employees a $20 tip. No one was behind us in line to allow us to keep the chain going, so we will be paying it forward for someone else later. 🙂
@laurentenRU TikTok & other social media display media favorites: strength a social media habit can have knowing what exactly you/others use the medium for(Papacharissi). @carisaclassacc's post and my reply show compulsive use as problematic while trying to be used for good. #selfsocietyclass
@ericaandself It's hard to generalize; people use digital media differently. Gays feel internet lets them remove filters used in some in-person interactions to be more true (Gross), while MUDs users develop relationships between the self & others as they desire (Sanchez). #selfsocietyclass
@PuttSridama On one hand, Twitter allows for online communities & thoughtful/fun interactions. On the other hand, it's hard to get abusive comments off social media. Everyone should use their real name because anonymity is more likely to cause online harassment (Mansfield). #selfsocietyclass
Gay people use the internet for building connections & support (Gross). However, the internet is also a site for abusive commentary (Mansfield). So, how can self-identified minorities, like gays, avoid the risks while utilizing their affordances when online? #selfsocietyclass
@sblrutgers Millennials' attention spans can let advertisers use this detected issue & addiction to their advantage. Media consumption has become habitual and lessens self control. Users compulsivity and addictive behaviors easily explain the image above (Papacharissi 76). #selfsocietyclass
@chuyuan_chen The U.S. is lower on this graph than I expected! Online connection is great, but in-person communication shouldn't be displaced. Online connections should be approached w/ enthusiasm, but constraints & affordances still affect interactions (Livingstone 395, 400).#selfsocietyclass
@carisaclassacc You & @Erica37087568 use TikTok a lot! Papacharissi says many online activities are addictive, but social networking is not on that list (being it's more new). Remote living w/ COVID, our pursuit to cheer up and lessen loneliness ups our Internet use (p. 64-65) .#selfsocietyclass
https://t.co/DhnrJyRidS I couldn't think of a better example of Internet addiction! Khloe suffers automaticity, lack of controllability/intentionality & compulsive internet use, resulting in her extreme preference for online interactions (Papacharissi 60-61). #selfsocietyclass
@carisaclassacc Bad joke, but it shows naturalization of hostility toward women online(Weiser&Miltner 171). The abusive comments aim to maim Demi & prob didn't help her mental health. She can't ignore their words, & things said online prob wouldn't be said in person(Mansfield). #selfsocietyclass
@sblrutgers Plus, the fact that this issue also blew up to be such a big thing (bigger than TikTok) shows how online harassment can travel at great speeds across platforms and on multiple devices. Also, abuse related to religious minorities is not uncommon (Mansfield). #selfsocietyclass
@jessnguyenRU Wow, those comments are rude! You would think those checking out Gunna's IG would be more supportive of him & community standards would not need be defined, but this shows the contrary. The conversation here is extremely foul and disrespectful (Mansfield, 2018). #selfsocietyclass
Mansfield says "author abuse" & "dismissive trolling" get blocked on the Guardian. Clearly, that isn't the case as much on Twitter! The top 3 comments on Abby Lee's post were dismissive and insulted her conduct as dance educator at the ALDC (and on Dance Moms). #selfsocietyclass
