On 29 June 2004, I attended my very first @NATO Summit in Istanbul, as a complete rookie. 22 years later, on 7 July 2026, I’m returning to Türkiye, this time in #Ankara, for another major #NATO Summit.
From enlargement and projecting stability beyond Alliance’s borders back to defending every inch of Allied territory! A stronger Europe in a stronger NATO! A remarkable transformation: NATO 3.0
Romania made Black Sea security a high priority on @NATO’s agenda. Recent weeks proved exactly why.
Today, the North Atlantic Council, the forum where the Alliance addresses its most pressing issues, turned to Black Sea security. I said it clearly: the answer to the growing drone threat is more capabilities. Romania is building them, but Allied support is necessary, because Romania’s security is NATO’s security.
I also briefed Allies on Neptun Deep, a project that will strengthen Romania’s and Europe’s energy security. Robust NATO situational awareness in the Black Sea is essential. At the same time, MCM Black Sea has proven its worth in demining; the next task is protecting critical undersea infrastructure.
The takeaways ahead of the Summit in Ankara: full Allied solidarity with Romania, determination to continue to support us with capabilities and consensus around accelerating all programmes and initiatives on drones.
NATO’s commitment to defend every inch of Allied territory demands that we consistently adapt to an evolving security landscape. As a direct result of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, we’ve seen more incidents with drones along our eastern flank – both in the air and at sea. NATO is working closely with our Allies to ensure we continue to address this challenge efficiently and effectively, including through discussions today in the North Atlantic Council focused on security along the Black Sea
Last night, Russia’s reckless attacks on Ukraine spilled across our border, but this time hurt Romanian citizens! @RomaniaNATO wish them speedy recovery!
We deeply appreciate the strong solidarity and support expressed by our Allies in great numbers. Together, we will clear these threats from our skies! Therefore, @NATO and Allies have to increase delivering more capabilities. We again stressed this in our meetings today at the HQ!
Today at #NATO we were grateful to hear from the DG of the #Chornobyl nuclear power plant Serhiy Tarakanov as we commemorated the 40th anniversary of the catastrophe. Chornobyl was a "never again” moment. But Russia’s war of aggression against 🇺🇦 is creating new risks & dangers.
Bucharest 9 + Nordic Allies standing strong together with #NATO Secretary General and our U.S. Allies, as observers, in Romania! We discussed about NATO 3.0, about more Europe in NATO at the upcoming #AnkaraSummit, about continuing our support for Ukraine and supporting the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Eastern & Nordic Allies are fully like-minded. I was honoured to be present and support this effort. Well done, #Romania! 👏

Today, we gathered once again with all the Romanians working at NATO HQ, continuing a promise that I made: stay close to each other! But this time, we had a special surprise in store! The famous and legendary Romanian stand-up comedy group #Divertis joined us and spent some memorable moments at @RomaniaNATO!
The Ministry of National Defence and NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT), together with defense industry companies from Romania🇷🇴 and abroad, are organizing the Eastern Phoenix 2026 (EAPH 26) exercise at the Capu Midia Training Range, from April 14–24

After President @NicusorDanRO visit to @NATO HQ, the message is clear, simple and powerful:
We count on NATO and NATO can count on us. Romania is secure.
President Dan also met with the @RomaniaNATO team, a moment we were looking for!
.@SecGenNATO welcomed 🇷🇴 President @NicusorDanRO to #NATO HQ for his first official visit, praising #Romania's steadfast role as an Ally since joining in 2004 and highlighting its strategic importance on the eastern flank and in the Black Sea region

This morning I had a substantive meeting at @NATO HQ with @SecGenNATO Mark Rutte. We discussed the security of #Romania and NATO's key role in its strengthening. I welcomed SecGen's determination for NATO to deliver security to all Allies and his assessment that Romania plays an important role within the Alliance.
We addressed the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the need for the region to be kept high on NATO’s agenda. We agreed that Eastern Sentry has to deliver a more focused deterrence and defence along the entire Eastern Flank.
We also discussed the need for increased defence investments and a stronger defence industrial capacity. I underlined our national plans to further develop our industry. I also expressed our firm commitment to continue to support Ukraine in its self-defence.
I invited Secretary General Rutte to the #B9 Plus Summit in Bucharest this May, ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara.
Romania’s security is NATO’s security. #WeAreNATO
#EasternSentry is strengthening the security of the entire Eastern Flank, including that of 🇷🇴 Romania, as we can clearly see.
This planned in advance exercise is demonstrating Allied solidarity and interoperability at its best! ⬇️
Today, we had the privilege of hosting at @NATO the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova @MihaiPopsoi. A strong and resilient partner, Republic of Moldova has gained valuable experience in countering hybrid threats which is worth sharing with Allies. So happy to see and exchange views with DPM Popsoi in the North Atlantic Council and at @RomaniaNATO.
The @NATO Ballistic Missile Defence system has proven its effectiveness. The Aegis Ashore site in #Deveselu, Romania, combined with the radar in Türkiye, the site in Poland, and the U.S. Aegis BMD ships, forms a robust layered defence.
Romania’s strategic decision to host a part of the system in Deveselu has proven to be the right one. Fifteen years ago, some claimed Iran lacked the ability to threaten the Euro-Atlantic zone with such missiles. Recent events have clearly proved otherwise.
NATO’s BMD remains purely defensive and essential for collective security. Romania’s contribution strengthens the entire Alliance.

Today, 4 years since Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, we paid tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people at @NATO HQ.
We were honored by the presence of FM @Oana_Toiu at this moment of solidarity.
All Allies were reminded that freedom and peace are never guaranteed.
