`My name is Julie Helgesen. I run Lesbians and the Nine Wolves, an online community for lesbians from around the world.

In the nineties, I was a DJ at a lesbian bar in Oslo. The lines were long when I played. A newspaper even called me the "trans queen of Oslo" — but that was about the music genre, not my identity.

Today, laws that let men identify as lesbians make a mockery of our sex-based rights. Same-sex attraction is a biological reality, not a personality trait. Accepting men as lesbians doesn't protect us — it erases us.

I can't go back to Oslo and find that lesbian club anymore, that home away from home. So I built one online.

I see my sisters scared to speak up. Women thrown out of groups for simply wanting single-sex spaces. Young lesbians being told they're "born in the wrong body" instead of being allowed to be butch or tomboy.

This isn't progress — it's queer homophobia. It attacks the very foundation of gay and lesbian rights.

As a lesbian, I’ve watched “inclusion” turn into the expectation that I must accept male bodies in my dating pool and in my spaces.

Claiming males can be lesbians doesn’t smash the patriarchy — it hands men access to women’s bodies and demands we call it liberation. Same-sex rights for women are being sacrificed on the altar of male feelings.
