Empowering the People Through Purposeful Representation

Yesterday in Awka, I witnessed another inspiring demonstration of what purposeful representation can achieve through the empowerment programme organised by Professor Lilian Orogbu.

What I saw was remarkable: vehicles, tricycles, motorcycles, refrigerators, grinding machines, and other productive assets being distributed to constituents - not merely as gifts, but as tools for creating livelihoods, strengthening families, and promoting self-reliance.

Prof. @Oby_Orogbu has consistently demonstrated that public office should be about service. Her interventions in education, infrastructure, scholarships and human development reflect a commitment to leaving her constituency better than she met it.

Whenever she invites me to an event, it is almost invariably to commission a school, inspect a road, support a scholarship initiative, or participate in a project that directly benefits the people. This is the kind of public engagement we must encourage in our country.

As I said yesterday, if she has achieved this much as a first-term legislator, one can only imagine what even greater impact she can make with more experience and responsibility in the National Assembly.

I commend Professor Lilian Orogbu for her courage, commitment and compassion. I also commend the people of Awka North and South Federal Constituency for supporting a representative who continues to demonstrate that leadership is about service, sacrifice and measurable impact.

Nigeria will progress when public office becomes less about what leaders receive and more about what they give back to the people.

With clear leadership, a new Nigeria is POssible.

Nigeria is slowly becoming a country where government breaks your legs, gives you crutches on credit, then demands applause for helping you walk.

Think about it.

Government policies helped push the cost of living through the roof.
Fuel became painfully expensive. Transportation followed.
Food followed.
Electricity followed.
Businesses transferred their increased costs to consumers.

Then came education.

Students in several federal institutions were confronted with massive increases in compulsory charges. Government's response? Technically, “tuition” remains free.

Fine.

But whether you call it tuition, registration, laboratory, accommodation or institutional charges, the struggling parent knows only one thing: MORE MONEY IS LEAVING THEIR POCKET.

Then government arrives with NELFUND.

Wonderful.

You make education increasingly expensive, then “help” the student by lending them money to afford it.

After NYSC, that graduate enters an economy where getting a decent job can itself become a full-time job. Thankfully, the law provides safeguards for unemployed beneficiaries and income-linked repayment.

But the bigger question remains:

WHY ARE WE CELEBRATING DEBT AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR AFFORDABILITY?

And we've seen this movie before.

During COVID, the Federal Government's MSME Survival Fund was explicitly presented as a GRANT, not a loan.

So if beneficiaries are now seeing deductions allegedly connected to COVID-era interventions, Nigerians deserve absolute clarity about WHICH programme is being recovered. Was it the Survival Fund grant? A CBN/NIRSAL loan? A bank set-off? Something else?

Because a grant cannot magically become a loan five years later without serious questions being asked.

Then there is fuel subsidy.

“SUBSIDY IS GONE!”

Nigerians swallowed the pain.

Fuel prices exploded. Transport fares exploded. Businesses suffered. Families adjusted meals. Workers watched their salaries become increasingly worthless.

Yet questions later emerged about government still absorbing costs associated with keeping petrol prices below full market levels at different periods.

So what exactly did Nigerians sacrifice for?

This is the pattern that should worry everyone:

CREATE OR INTENSIFY THE PAIN.

INTRODUCE A LOAN, PALLIATIVE OR INTERVENTION.

HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE.

PRINT BANNERS.

ANNOUNCE BILLIONS.

THEN EXPECT NIGERIANS TO CLAP.

Governance cannot become an endless cycle where citizens absorb the shock while government receives the applause for cushioning a fraction of that same shock.

Don't make my life unnecessarily expensive and then expect gratitude because you've created a portal where I can borrow money to survive it.

Don't celebrate giving me crutches when your policies helped break my legs.

Nigeria needs an economy where hardworking people can afford food, transportation, electricity and education from their INCOME, not a country where every basic necessity gradually requires another government intervention, palliative or loan.

At some point, we must stop measuring governance by how many relief programmes government announces.

The real question is:

WHY DO NIGERIANS KEEP NEEDING SO MUCH “RELIEF” IN THE FIRST PLACE?

You cannot continuously manufacture hardship and demand applause for managing its consequences.

That is not prosperity.

That is crisis management dressed up as governance.
