Goals have a finish line. Greatness doesnโt.
Pete Carroll sadโฆ
โGoals, you achieve them. To me, I want ongoing, never-ending aspirations of being great at what youโre doing.โ
Thatโs the mindset.
Never arrive.
Never stop learning.
Never stop growing.
Keep chasing better. ๐
Tom Brady says his career turned around when a sports psychologist told him to stop complaining about what he wasnโt getting and start stewarding what he had the right way
โGreg said to me, โWhy donโt you quit bitching about all the things youโre not getting, and how about you do the best with whatever opportunities you get?โ, โStop worrying about what the other quarterbackโs getting. Stop worrying about what the coach is saying to you.โโ
โโEvery time you get in there, you bring the juice. You bring the energy. You bring the enthusiasm. You treat practice like a game.โ Because if you just decide to go out there and youโre blaming everybody else, where does that get you? So I started to change my attitude.โ
โI didnโt have a lot of confidence in myself. And when you donโt have a lot of confidence in yourself, you blame other people. When you gain confidence in yourself, you start pointing the finger at yourself.โ
โI would encourage every athlete to look in the mirror after every day of practice or a game and say, โWhat can I do better to help the team? What can I do better?โโ
โNot, โWhat does the coach need to do better?โ Not, โWhat do my teammates need to do better?โ, โWhat do I need to do better?โ If every player does that, youโre going to have an incredible team.โ
โYou canโt have a false confidence. You donโt only gain your confidence because of your physical ability. You gain your confidence because youโre prepared, because youโre competitive. I couldnโt just show up and be better than everybody.โ
โI had to show up prepared. I had to show up with energy. I had to show up with my body feeling right. I had to show up like I was on a mission.โ
Pete Carroll says winning championships was never actually the point
โIt isnโt about winning the championship. Itโs not about that. As soon as you win it, itโs over with. Itโs in your back pocket. Youโve already done that.โ
โThatโs not the motivator. The motivator is to be the best you can possibly be. Thatโs ongoing. It never ends. Iโm not a big goals guy.โ
โGoals, you achieve them. To me, I want ongoing, never-ending aspirations of being great at what youโre doing. There is no one game that is the only game. There is no one accomplishment thatโs the only accomplishment.โ
โCan you come back again? Is that really who you are? Is that worth fighting for?โ
โCan you be true to yourself? Can you really be yourself under all circumstances? No matter what happens, when you get your ass whipped in the freaking Super Bowl, when you had two in a row and youโre two seconds from doing it again, can you come back after that moment and still be who you are?โ
โThat was what the challenge was to me. As hard as that looked, as hard as it felt, and as hard as it was on all the people around me, I took it like this: โOkay, you knew this was going to happen sometime.โ โAre you going to be the real deal or not?โโ
Jaylen Brown says fasting โsaved my lifeโ and strengthened his mental health
โGiving your body a chance. You spend so much time focusing on digesting and breaking down stuff. When there's nothing in your system, your body can use that energy to go through so many different things, like to heal yourself, to make yourself have a little bit more clarity, or just your body starts to function in different ways when you have the energy to do soโ
โHow it's helped me in my craft is that it also pushes and challenges you. When you challenge your body by fasting and challenge your spirit, you also challenge your mental as well. It's your ability to persevere, your ability now to remain calm in adverse situations. I think fasting has helped me in thatโ
โIt's increased my mental health, and I've said it before, in a lot of ways it's really saved my life. We go through trauma. We all have issues and things that we deal with on this planet that have an effect on us because we're humans. The state of your mind, the state of your well-being, can determine how you go forward from those momentsโ
โBeing able to have strong mental health, being able to endure life's challenges, is a great skill set. I think fasting has helped me in that regard, developing that so that now when you reach these moments of adversity, these moments of anxiety, of angst, depression, that you're able to persevere because you've practiced itโ
โIf your body can go without water and food, your body can go without a lot of these other things, distractions, stress, and whatever is causing you depression, whatever is causing your lack of mental health. Actively challenge yourself because that's where growth happens, not from comfortโ
NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson said the one constant among winning players is being willing to fail in the summer when nobody is watching.
Every failed rep forces you to adjust and figure it out, and that is exactly what builds the self belief that shows up when the lights come on.
Get uncomfortable early and oftenโฆ that is how winners are built.
Mike Brown:
"The buy in. It was a contract that I had everybody sign opening dinner night and I still have it framed. Everybody's signature from Mr. Dolan to Leon Rose, all the coaches, all the players, all the staff that was there that night signed and basically it was about committing to sacrifice, having a competitive spirit, being connected, believing in each other in the process while holding everybody accountable even myself...I told everybody that night if you're not gonna abide by this I'd have more respect for you to not sign it than to sign it and BS your way through tonight and BS your way through this and everybody bought in from day 1"
Jalen Brunson on Kobe Bryant mentality:
โI think the way I carry myself and way I do things, itโs a credit to how I was raised by my parents. But also part of their philosophy steeps into the Mamba mentality as well. So thereโs a connectivity there. I do my best to stay present in the moment and do everything I can to make sure my mind is right. Be mentally and physically ready everyday. Trusting my work. Itโs whatโs gotten me here. So thereโs connectivity about itโ
