Marketa Vondrousova says she was completely broken when she heard the verdict, but she has chosen to fight it, not only for herself, but for the principle, ‘What scares me the most is their unlimited power and the absolute calm with which they destroy people's lives’
Q: “They are obviously only giving the world their version and not the whole story.”
"If they had made an effort and given me a lower sentence, you would think that at least they had taken something into account. But here it is clear that they ignored absolutely everything. Giving someone a four-year ban at my stage of career means the real end of tennis. I am no longer twenty so that I can wait four years to return. After what happened with Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, when everyone was criticized for their soft approach to the stars, they wanted to prove their power over me. And they proved it. It is extremely important for me that people know that the commissioner admitted to the misconduct during the interrogation. That is 100% true. ITIA cannot now claim that it was a properly conducted inspection. Do they think that I will collapse and not defend myself? I have been in this for seven months and I know everything that has happened. Already in December, during the first interrogations, you felt as if you had killed someone. They want private information, they want absolutely everything. It aims to make a person mentally unable to take it and give up.”
Q: “How do you cope?”
"It's hard. The worst part is that they label you as someone who did drugs. And yet I've never had a positive test. Unfortunately, that label still sticks with me to some extent, and you feel ashamed, even if you have no reason to. I did my best to make it clear that I didn't take any drugs. It's extremely difficult to fight as an individual against a giant organization where officials send papers from office to office. I live with that every day, for seven months straight. Every month there's a glimmer of hope that the situation will be clarified, and in the end you get four years, which destroys my career."
Q: “The way out is to appeal to CAS. Do you feel ready for that fight?”
"On Monday after the verdict was announced, I was completely broken. Now I feel that I have to fight not only for myself, but for the principle. I would really like it to turn out well and it turns out that we were telling the truth all along. During the process, one loses faith and experiences a feeling of complete helplessness, but I was under extreme stress in front of the tribunal because it was about my life, reputation and career. I tried to answer everything as honestly as possible. When the commissioner basically failed the interrogation and couldn't answer half of the questions, we left the hearing with a good feeling. And then comes such a punishment. Maybe we were too optimistic, but after all this, I definitely am not. What scares me the most is their unlimited power and the absolute calm with which they destroy people's lives. An individual has almost no power against them."

Oleksandra Oliynykova pulls out her phone mid-press conference at Roland Garros and shows photos of Diana Shnaider playing in the Gazprom tournament, ‘I think it's the same as playing in Nazi Germany in front of Gestapo officers in the tournament organized by a company which built Auschwitz’
"What's serious here is the fact that this match is going to happen. Diana Shnaider is a person who participated in a Gazprom tournament.
If you want to see. This is her in the picture at the Gazprom tournament.
The Gazprom tournament is a company that's financing the war crimes. Playing in a tournament which is financing the camps for kids, I think it's the same as playing in Nazi Germany in front of Gestapo officers in the tournament organized by a company which built Auschwitz. There's no difference to me.
The thing is, everyone is silent about what this person did. She also put likes on the publications of Russian propagandists.
Here are some screenshots. I can send it to you later if you want to this. I'm someone who is suffering just by being at home. My home is being attacked by Gazprom money. They are paying for this, for the drones which are attacking my city.
And tomorrow people will make a show of this. So is it really important who will hit a harder forehand tomorrow or the fact that we're ignoring things like this here."
They face each other next in the 3rd round of Roland Garros.
