For the many racing fans on here asking "What happened to Oakbank?" remember that the Committee proactively sought to destroy its biggest meeting in collaboration with Racing SA.
We were told the end of jumps racing would INCREASE crowd numbers. How's that working out for you?
Let's hope Members of the Racing SA board actually showed up to Oakbank this year to see for themselves the irreversible damage they have wrought by supporting the government's ban on jumps racing in South Australia.
We did try to tell them what would happen...
@PuntersClubSA Can I suggest you read the attached which details how many jumpers were potentially in training at the time of the ban, the disincentives to owners, and the lack of infrastructure investment by Racing SA: https://t.co/09tuo2c7UM
When Racing SA and Oakbank collaborated with the government to destroy jumps racing in SA, then CEO Nick Redin said, "Whether the removal of jumps has allowed Oakbank to engage with the newer generation remains to be seen."
I think we know the answer now...
@Awbloodstock@adrianheilmann@RacingPedigrees I know people say it will never happen, but too many people here in SA thought banning jumps racing would never happen, and look where we are. Never give them an inch!
The Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank was first run in 1876, making it older than Wimbledon, the Calcutta Cup, the Ashes and the Stanley Cup, not to mention the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
And Oakbank Racing Club and Racing SA threw all of this history away, and for what?
@Awbloodstock@adrianheilmann@RacingPedigrees Agree completely about govt overreach. So racing people, whether they like jumps racing or not, should not acquies with governments who want to harm the industry. Consider what would happen to ALL racing if the Greens were to get near power: https://t.co/9h3V4vOWG1
@Awbloodstock@adrianheilmann@RacingPedigrees Unsurprisingly I disagree vehemently, but putting that aside aren't we in dangerous territory if it becomes acceptable for governments to ban racing that is "Not a great spectacle"? Who is going to determine that?
@ScottWeaver1970 Can I respectfully suggest that you read our submission to Racing SA which gives a more accurate picture as to the number of local jumpers in training just prior to the ban: https://t.co/V2SRxkgHI4
Anyone who is asking "What happened to Oakbank" needs to remember that Racing SA was actively involved in lobbying the government to kill off a sector of the industry it (allegedly) represents.
In short, spending industry to money to help kill off a part of the industry.
@adrianheilmann@RacingPedigrees While rejecting your premise, I would agree that here in SA a primary barrier has been Racing SA and its lack of support in terms of infrastructure. You might find this interesting as to some of the issues faced: https://t.co/V2SRxkgHI4
@SARacingFan1 It is not possible to say with any certainty whether that would have been the case or not. But it does not absolve Oakbank from acquiescing.
Can I recommend you read our submission to Racing SA ahead of the ban, which outlines the state of the industry: https://t.co/09tuo2c7UM
@Awbloodstock@RacingPedigrees I would respectfully draw your attention to our submission to Racing SA ahead of the ban, in particular the number of SA trainers who had jumpers in work: https://t.co/V2SRxkgHI4
@SARacingFan1 You are unclear on the order of events. The proposal was put to Oakbank not to run jumps races, the Committee agreed, and then Racing SA followed through on its plan not to schedule jumps races in SA.
@SARacingFan1 I'm afraid that is not the case. There was a vote by the Committee at which it agreed to Racing SA's proposal not to run jumps racing at Oakbank.
I should know — I was there.
