The NHF @Southwell_Races yesterday was worth 25% more than the same race in 2016. Over the same period the minimum wage cost for 21-25yo’s has risen by 83% and the cost of feed by approx 65%. These are core costs for trainers but don’t forget ERNIC, energy etc which have also risen exponentially. To an extent this is reflected in increased fees but poor returns is why Owner base is shrinking followed by the Training & Breeding industries.
Over the same time period the total income from the betting industry to racing (levy, media rights and sponsorship) is estimated to have risen from £220m to £425m (+£205m). Total prize money in 2016 was £137.6m and in 2025 was £195m (+£57.4m). Surely Prize Money should have risen in line with income from bookmakers?
The reality appears to be a shortfall of approx £150m which is why participants feel shortchanged and are wondering where all the money is going? (Figures not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but they tell the story of why we are where we are)

Aidan O'Brien on how horse racing must evolve
🗣️ "Racing has to get involved in all the social media stuff and get it out there to everybody. We need to keep showing young people how amazing this sport of ours is. What's controlling everybody's minds at the moment is what's on their phones. X, Instagram, TikTok and all the various different things young people look at on their phones. That's what builds the imagination of our young people now.
"Look, it's not politically correct to say this, but let people have a bet and let them enjoy having a bet and feel what it's like to back a winner. You don't have to drink alcohol or take drugs to get that feeling because none of those things can give you that feeling of backing a winner.
"You have an opinion, you stand by your opinion, you then go and feel the adrenaline rush. If you get beaten you're disappointed, but you try to improve. But when you start working it all out and start getting it right, it's that feelgood factor that people need so badly in their lives.
"Everyone is working so hard day in and day out so everyone needs a little escape and racing gives people a very clean, decent escape.
"The betting is so controlled now that if someone is getting into trouble because of betting, it is picked up on very quickly. Don't be taking away these things that can make people feel better. Obviously, it can make people feel bad, but there are so many ways to help those people now.
"We have a positive story to tell in racing, so we need the young people to hear about it."
Rarely post stories other than blatant self promotion of my own (🤣) but had to share this beyond the pages of Winning Post. Lovely tribute by one of the all-time best racing writers.

One of the rare stallions to have covered mares during his racing career
On Saturday at Bordeaux, Pink Panthera (Chachnak) won her Listed race against the colts and will now head to the Prix de Diane. Her sire, Chachnak, has the unusual distinction of having alternated between stud duties and racing throughout his career. He covered mares every year from 2021 to 2026 while still racing, making four starts in 2022 and even winning twice that season.
Starting from a relatively modest book of mares, Chachnak has stood out. He has already sired 28 winners and four black-type performers from 41 runners. Following the encouraging signs shown by his first crops, the stallion is set to cover around 100 mares this year.
His majority owner, Jean-Pierre Dubois — often described as the John Magnier of trotting — has received offers to sell him abroad, but has so far turned them down.

Well said, Farmer Dave! The world has gone completely mad, none of it makes sense anymore.
The only sane move left is to scrap this Net Zero nonsense and remove the parties that are actively supporting this nightmare.👇🏽🇦🇺
This week on Karl Weekly.
The Budget’s repercussions continue. Small business gets slugged again – GST, payroll tax, CGT… and now a so-called 'death tax'.
They call it fairness. Business owners are calling it exactly what it is.
