Throughout my 6 years in boarding school, my parents never missed a single visiting day. I can never question their love for me. even when I got to ss3 they’ll still come😂i had conflict with them for that because e dey reduce my steeze, I know better now and I’m really proud 😊
I became the head boy of my school this way. Mind you, I am not a Gen Z. My school set this precedent a long time ago and it is not as easy as you think it is.
First of all, all students are informed about the position of head boy and head girl, and a deadline date is set for the nomination form. It is free.
I remember how reluctant I was until my Economics teacher instructed me to apply. I got the nomination form on the last day.
After the nomination stage, we were subjected to the first round of assessment, which is your academic result. I remember that Friday afternoon when we were seated with the school management. I mean the real decision makers. I can tell you, anybody who made less than 7 As out of 10 was immediately disqualified.
After that, we proceeded to the next stage, which was the teachers' assessment. You would have to face all the teachers. They question your ability to lead.
One of the issues they raised with me was my small body and how I could handle stronger or taller students than me. I had prepared for this by studying John Maxwell’s 5 levels of leadership skills. I knew they would ask because I was truly small.
My friend who later became the Assistant Head Boy, I remember how our Yoruba teacher tackled him that he did not usually score well in his Yoruba but scored 90s in Physics and Maths.
At the end of this stage, students who were perceived to be rude or had a case/issue of disrespect with teachers were immediately disqualified.
We then proceeded to the next stage, which is the campaign stage. The idea is if you must be the head boy, you must be popular, humble, and the students must accept you as their leader.
I know how many times I went to the JS1 and JS2 students to seek votes. I had to form a political alliance with some other students, and we built our campaign together to ensure we were victorious. We went around together, campaigned together, and even helped in organizing small tutorial sessions for junior students to promote my candidacy.
I remember going to meet the Wike of our time (Abdul-Azeez) to help talk to his friends about my candidacy.
We were given two weeks to campaign before the final/grand debate, where there was a face-off between me and my friend in front of all the school (students, teachers, management) for both the head boy and head girl positions.
There were no photo posters at the time, but my name was everywhere. I remember quoting John Maxwell and writing so many short pieces.
My model was simple:
Problem: (what the students were facing)
Solution: (what I would do).
All the students could see it.
The final debate was on a Friday. With the applause I got from this debate, my speaking skills, and my ability to answer questions, the students had already decided who their leader would be.
After the debate, the next Monday was the election. We started the election by 3 PM on that Monday. And it was coordinated in such a way that as you voted, you were going home.
I remember receiving a call from my Geography teacher, who was among my supporters at the time, telling me I was leading overwhelmingly.
At the end of the results, I had a 100% score with the management board because I was the only student with 10/10 As. Mind you, it was back to back. A norm.
From the teachers, I had 97% of the votes. I only had two objections.
From the students, I won in JS1, JS2, JS3, SS1, and SS2. My opponent won only in SS3. I know why I lost SS3, but that is a story for another day.
This was how I became the head boy. Going by all of this, I gained public speaking, writing, strategic negotiation, persuasive skills, alliance-building skill and many more.
And to me, if I were to be the principal of a school today, that system would be promoted because it was the best.
At the end of the day, I was the most influential, most popular, and most celebrated head boy my school ever had.
hello,
this is a fundraiser for one of my classmates, esther. she is down with bilateral complex dermoid ovarian cysts, on both sides of her ovaries (6cm+ on each side).
what this means is that they can burst at any moment which may affect her chance of having biological children tomorrow; or affect some organs which may lead to death, heavens forbid.
as a result walking and any form of physical activity are proving rather difficult for her now.
please help us save esther with your 1k, 2k and retweets. we are to resume our final year next week, and she needs all the strength to brave her lectures, projects and our fyb activities.
