My sister stole my college acceptance letter, made me believe the university had rejected me, and watched me struggle for three years.

In Ohio, our parents always favored her. When we applied to the same university, my acceptance letter arrived first. It included an enrollment deadline and instructions for confirming my place.

My sister hid it before I could see it. When I checked the mailbox and found nothing, she told me the university had probably rejected me. My mother said I should stop dwelling on something that clearly was not meant for me.

I believed them.

I worked two jobs, attended community college, and eventually became a supervisor at a growing company. I convinced myself that my university dream had never been possible.

Three years later, my sister applied for a management position at my company. After her interview, she discovered I was on the hiring panel.

That evening, she showed up at my apartment.

“I know what I did was wrong,” she said. “But please do not let what happened between us ruin my chances. This job could change my life.”

I stared at her.

“You let me spend three years believing I wasn’t good enough to get into college. Why should I protect your future now?”

She started crying.

“I was afraid you would leave home and become more successful than me.”

Then she confessed something worse.

“Mom knew I took the letter.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean, she knew?”

“She found out that night. She told me not to say anything because she didn’t want another fight in the family.”

My mother had watched me work two jobs, struggle through community college, and blame myself for a rejection that never happened.

She could have told me the truth at any point.

She chose not to.
