Positive definitions of masculinity are often shot down because "women can do that too."

Which leaves only negative definitions of masculinity allowed.

Physical strength. Assertiveness. Courage. Independence. Going against the grain.

Nope, not masculine; just signs of being a healthy adult.

This ignores the reality that life operates in hierarchy for men.

Can women be physically strong? Sure, but it's not women who tell me stories of how no one respected them before they started lifting.

Can women be assertive? Sure, but most women still prefer a guy with the balls to ask her out.

Can women be independent? Sure, but it's still mostly men paying for dates.

We expect men to still *have* masculine traits but refuse to honor their efforts.

Having muscles, asking a woman out, & paying for dinner aren't respected; they're expected.

All responsibility, no ability for a man to declare his masculinity & be honored for it, or even (oh no!) seen as valuable in a way women usually aren't.

Women can be masculine. Men can be feminine. I personally think it's healthiest to be a mix of both.

But at some point, we decided women were allowed to be both uniquely feminine AND masculine.

Men are still mocked for being too feminine AND we've taken their right to have uniquely masculine traits they're proud of away.

Women did not get the short straw here; men did.

No wonder young men are so confused!
