깊은 산속이나 외딴 섬은 오랫동안 뱀파이어에게 좋은 은신처였다. 휴대전화가 터지지 않고 인터넷 설치도 어려운 곳이라면 인간이 일부러 찾아올 이유도 적었다. 불편함은 곧 안전을 뜻했다.

하지만 최근 저궤도 위성을 이용한 인터넷 서비스가 확대되면서 상황이 달라졌다. 지상 통신망이 없는 지역에서도 작은 수신 장비만 설치하면 인터넷을 쓸 수 있게 된 것이다. 도시를 떠나 오지에서 일하려는 인간들이 늘었고, 예전에는 사람 한 명 보기 힘들던 장소에도 장기 체류자가 나타나기 시작했다.

변화를 미처 몰랐던 뱀파이어들의 당황스러운 목격담도 이어진다. 수십 년째 비워둔 산장이 어느 날 원격 근무자의 숙소로 바뀌거나, 동굴 근처까지 찾아온 여행객이 실시간 방송을 켜는 식이다. 인간이 오지에서 가장 먼저 찾는 것이 식량이나 잠자리보다 인터넷 연결이라는 점도 예상 밖이었다.

물론 위성 인터넷 자체가 뱀파이어의 위치를 찾아내는 것은 아니다. 문제는 인터넷이 연결되면서 사람이 모이고, 사진과 위치 정보가 함께 쌓인다는 데 있다. 지도에 없던 길이 여행 후기 한 편으로 알려지고, 조용했던 폐가가 하룻밤 사이 인기 촬영지가 되는 일도 생긴다.

연결이 닿지 않는다는 이유만으로 안전했던 시대는 끝나가고 있다. 새 은신처를 구하려는 이들에게 이제 "인터넷이 안 되는 곳"은 충분한 조건이 아니다. 인간들은 그곳에서도 어떻게든 접속할 방법을 찾아내기 때문이다.
