Every generation fears new technology will make kids dumber. Every generation is wrong.

When students got access to the internet, the panic was immediate. They won’t memorize anything. They won’t learn to think. They’ll just Google everything.

Two decades later, we know what actually happened. The curious ones used the internet to learn faster than any generation before them. The passive ones scrolled and fell behind. The technology didn’t determine the outcome. The person using it did.

AI is the same story, just amplified.

The internet gave you access to information. AI gives you access to understanding. You can ask it to explain something ten diffrent ways until it clicks. You can learn at your own pace with infinite patience on the other side of the screen.

But you have to want it.

My sister is training to be a grade school teacher, and she’s already seeing the divide form in real time. Some students have completely checked out. Lost in TikTok and video games, passively consuming content that asks nothing of them.

Then there are the other kids. The ones using educational YouTube to teach themselves things outside the curriculum. The ones asking AI to help them understand concepts their teachers haven’t even touched yet. These kids aren’t just keeping up. They’re pulling ahead at a pace that would have been impossible ten years ago.

This is the new divide. And it’s not about access to technology. Everyone has that now. It’s about what you do when the world hands you infinite information and says figure out what you want to know.

School operates on a push model. Information gets forced on you whether your curious or not. AI and the internet operate on a pull model. The information is there, but you have to reach for it. You have to ask questions. You have to actually want to go deeper.

The curious have never had more leverage. Every question can be answered. Every rabbit hole can be explored. Every passing interest can become genuine expertise.

The incurious have never been more at risk. They’re surrounded by the most powerful learning tools in human history and using them to watch fifteen second videos.

This gap is only going to widen. The question isn’t whether AI will make the next generation dumb. The question is which part of that generation you’re looking at.
