@Schmilly2@BevansAdvocate Institutions are the rules, norms or operating procedures around which our expectations of behaviour converge so that we reduce the uncertainty of interacting with one another.
If you want good institutionalist theory then look beyond economics into political economy.
@Picketer @macaulaybalkan Mon’s plan to lower the indexation rate is welcome and needed. But it doesn’t address the two worst aspects of HELP debts: wages being garnished without a reduction in the debt until after indexation, and HELP entering into debt:income ratios when getting a mortgage.
@Robs1812@MChandlerMather Pretty sure Max and the Greens have been banging the drum about Israel’s war on Gaza and Australian weapons sales to Israel well before this happened.
@Robs1812@MChandlerMather I dunno Rob, the Australian government awarding contracts to a defence company whose product has been used to kill an Australian seems exactly like the thing that a parliamentarian should be talking about.
@reynoldsrd Uhh I’d actually agree with his second tweet. We’ve created generations of voters whose wealth is predicated on land, and future generations of aspirational land owners. The political economy of housing in Aus is a major constraint to reform.
@MChandlerMather The housing in Paris you covet - medium/density w zero setbacks - is illegal to build in most capital cities.
You’ve even campaigned against such housing in your electorate!
@reynoldsrd My HELP repayments are removed each fortnight but don’t get deducted from my total balance until after indexation.
Payments should be accumulated into a fund paying the cash rate and then deducted prior to the indexation rate being applied.
@ghosted_machine @benegotherit No way Tleilaxu make it into the third movie if Villeneuve can’t find a way to fit the spacing guild into the second movie.
@SueJackson3068 @beneltham Sue, event promotion is heavily regulated. Every step of the process requires a multitude of stakeholders to review and sign off on whether the event proceeds. This includes police, ambos, cfa, council, even local residents, who can object. They are on site during event as well.
@beneltham @SueJackson3068 Event promoters work with various stakeholders - CFA, ambos, vicpol, council - to design an event plan that mitigates various risks and ensures the safety of patrons. Every step of the way those stakeholders have final authority, as they are the SMEs.
@beneltham @SueJackson3068 What? Have you any idea how these events are organised and ran? The reason the promoters aren’t given decision making authority re: assessing risk, determining if event proceeds, is because it’s a massive conflict of interest.
@beneltham @SueJackson3068 The promoters aren’t experts in assessing risk can only take direction from authorities. The command to cancel the event came on Sunday. It entirely appropriate to ask why the authorities took so long.
@reynoldsrd Too many progressives view social theory as some kind of super power which gives them the ability to peer into the minds of individuals and understand their true beliefs and motivations.
@Chlo_DeLisle @ThreetothePower @johnb78 It’s also a contested definition within sociology, and sociologists have criticised the practice of deploying it to categorise individual acts as racist/not racist.
@fellawhomstdve No, that he chooses is literally the point.
Paul isn’t a hero in the book. The book was written as a cautionary tale against heroes and messiahs.
@peter_tulip One thing the Greens are correct about is that the Commonwealth have big carrots and sticks available to them to sway what is a problem for state parliaments.
Time to start using those sticks and carrots.
