I watched Trump’s speech at the Correspondents’ Dinner last night.
It’s hard to articulate how sad it made me.
Sad and embarrassed and exhausted.
Here is the thing about a man who is a joke. He can’t tell one.
People think humor is a talent. It isn’t. It’s a capacity. To make someone laugh you have to be able to laugh at yourself, and to laugh at yourself you have to step outside of yourself and see what everyone else sees. For one second you have to be just another person in the room.
Most people can do this by the time they are nine years old.
He has never once managed it. Not in fifty years of cameras. Not for a second.
That is not a quirk. It is a symptom. The muscle that lets you tell a joke is the same one that lets you feel what another person feels. A man who cannot survive being laughed at cannot imagine being anyone but himself. He will only ever be generous when it is photographed. He will only ever be kind when it is filmed.
There is a name for it.
So he stood up there and did what he always does. He hit down. He made jokes about people’s weight. He made jokes about their intelligence. He made jokes about how women look. He read out the names of people he doesn’t like, and mocked them. Always mocking. And when no one laughed he blamed his speech writers.
The cruelty dressed as humor has worn so thin.
And for the 30% of you still in the cult who will inevitably call me a crackhead and blame it all on my Dad, all I can say is please, for the love of God, open your eyes. Wake the fuck up. Have some dignity. Have some pride.
Joe Biden wasn’t standing at that podium last night. Donald Trump was.
And at the end of it he put on a red hat that said Trump 2028 and told the room he was running again. No one laughed because everyone knows he has no intention of leaving.
Just another joke at our expense.
I spent the last few months talking to people across the political spectrum, and to people who want nothing to do with politics at all. Here is what I learned.
We are not a divided country. We are a country being divided, on purpose, by an American oligarchy that profits from the fight. They’ve captured our government, denied our healthcare, looted our treasury, and saddled us with crippling debt.
I believe in a New New Deal. Healthcare as a human right. The right of every family to a decent home, and an end to endless wars.
And a dividend paid to every American from the AI economy, because these machines were built on the whole of human inheritance. That inheritance belongs to all of us, and not just to the handful of men playing God with our very existence.
And none of it happens if we just move on. Donald Trump, his family, and his administration are robbing us blind, not just of our money, but of our faith in one another, and they have to answer for it. Truth and reconciliation, not revenge. Then we break the system that let them do it.
The question is not whether we will lose our democracy. The question is whether we will fight to take back what has already been stolen.
I learned in recovery that you can’t heal what you won’t name. Neither can a country.
The Taco Bell slander must come to an end. Taco Bell has been there for me so many times over the years and not once has it ever given me diarrhea. Your "Taco Bell gives you diarrhea" takes are hackneyed and dumb. Cheesy Gordita crunch is a gift from the gods
The Taco Bell finger pointing is a psyop to redirect attention from the real culprit, the deregulation and lack of oversight in our food supply. pass it along and live más comrade
Breathing in hefty lungfuls of smoke as I get explosive diarrhea from salad, the sky turns apocalyptic orange while oil companies drill in protected lands, screwworms are eating cattle alive and the president just paid $6 million for rape. And I’m also able to bet on all of it!
Amazon invested $8 billion in Anthropic.
Anthropic’s biggest investor.
Amazon researchers jailbroke Fable 5.
Then Andy Jassy personally called the White House Thursday night.
By Friday at 5:20pm Anthropic got a letter.
Models shut down by Friday evening.
At least five other companies also called senior administration officials Thursday and Friday morning.
The security expert Anthropic shared the report with said the jailbreak was researchers asking questions defenders would normally ask AI.
Called the government response “way out of line with what’s actually in the research report.”
Amazon sells competing AI models.
Amazon invested in Anthropic.
Amazon jailbroke Anthropic’s model.
Amazon called the White House.
Anthropic got shut down.
Amazon’s models were not affected.
The administration said other models don’t pose a national security threat.
Amazon sells those models.
This is the cleanest conflict of interest in Silicon Valley history.
And it happened in 48 hours.
Things most Americans agree on:
Groceries cost too much.
Tariffs suck and make no sense.
Congress and Presidents shouldn’t trade stocks.
The debt is a mess.
The border should be secure, but legal immigration is good.
Endless wars are stupid, especially ones that nobody wants and have never been explained.
Americans are exhausted.
AI is like my new best friend that also might be trying to take my job, my ability to think for myself, and my humanity in the process. Yo like I love you, but WTF, but I still love you.
Diversity is actually awesome! The opposite is boring AF.
Canadians are super fucking cool.
Mexicans are chill.
Putin isn’t a good guy looking out for America’s best interest. Rocky IV and Miracle are great movies.
Good neighbors are a blessing.
Freedom of religion and coexistence without having to blow each other up is probably a good idea.
We all question, are we alone in the universe?
We all fuck up along the way.
Epstein didn’t hang himself.
The Trumps and Epstein were best friends for decades. It’s like Bert trying to tell us Ernie was just an acquaintance in the same social scene on Sesame Street back in the day.
The Cowboys suck. Go Birds!
Things we’re told to fight about:
Me.
Laptop.
Vaccines.
Transgenders in sports.
Pronouns.
That’s the joke.
