Dolly Parton on why her husband never wanted to be seen in public with her and how she knew to keep his life private.
“My husband did not want to be out there. He never did an interview in his life.
When I first got here, I won Song of the Year and won my award in 1966, the year we got married. I wanted him to go with me, so he rented a tuxedo. I begged him to go.
When we were leaving, he started taking off the jacket and said, ‘Now, I want you to do great, but don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things, ’cause I ain’t going.’
And he never did.
I knew right then that I was just gonna keep him private as best I could. Never ask him to do nothing, and certainly he wasn’t gonna volunteer.
He was very proud of me, of course, but we got along great because we didn’t have nothing to fight over like that.”
