It's remarkable how aircraft fuel tanks can become an ideal environment for microbiological growth.

Microorganisms require three key elements to thrive: a food source, water, and favorable temperatures.

Jet fuel provides abundant hydrocarbons as nourishment, while water is inevitably present in every fuel tank.

This water enters through two primary sources:

• Dissolved water already present in the uplifted fuel
• Condensation caused by vent air entering the tank during normal flight operations - particularly during descent, when cold, dry air from cruise altitude meets warmer, more humid air at lower levels.

As a result, the risk of microbial contamination rises significantly in hot and humid climates, where temperature and moisture conditions accelerate growth.

One of the most serious operational impacts is fuel quantity overread. Microbial growth (and associated water) can foul the Fuel Quantity Indication System (FQIS) probes, causing them to register higher fuel levels than actually present.

Declassified documents show that Singapore actually engineered its own exit and proposed the separation to Malaysia in 1965.
