For the last few months, I have been watching closely the reactions of the mathematical community to the rapid developments of mathematically capable AI agents. From what I see, we are undergoing a dramatic shift in perspectives. I think it's important for society to understand that pure mathematics has been explored solely by human minds for several millennia, and despite the changing role of mathematicians from royal consultants and monks to more modern scholars and finally to academic mathematicians, what is happening nowadays is probably the biggest mental shift since humanity started perceiving mathematics as a worthy occupation.

I've read lots of posts, and many share the sentiment that we are losing the puzzle-like, problem-driven approach to mathematics. I don't think this is the core sentiment. In my opinion, the crux lies in the common denominator of the mathematical activities that humans have ever done - we are curious creatures, and this inner curiosity is a driving factor of our development, an imperative, and the reason for so many successes of our civilization here on Earth. Perhaps with the advent of superhuman AI, we will completely lose all the incentives to develop and curate our own curiosity. While I am on the team that believes AI won't kill that completely, I can certainly understand why so many folks are worried that we will eventually abandon it. This might be especially compelling if we realize at some point that AI models are capable of solving essentially all important problems that humanity can ever come up with.

I remember reading, while I was in graduate school, a short essay by Michał Heller, "How to Be a Scholar". There are several important excerpts to take from this text. One is about contemplation. Human mathematics (and science in general) is a struggle with ideas, and we need to play with them in our minds, otherwise, they evaporate and lose meaning to us. And this is important because, for the whole society, the real value of mathematicians is how we implant in the next generation the role of contemplative thinking about abstractions and ideas. There is no better training in learning alien notions than getting exposed to the impressive cathedral of mathematics. And here I think it's important to realize that the construction will soon start growing without our own interventions, but we need to curate a population of contemplative thinkers who will carry on this noble and important activity for the greater good of society, teaching everyone how to stay in the loop and be more fully a part of civilization.
