SIU uncovers R2 billion fraud at Tembisa Hospital
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has uncovered a massive R2 billion fraud scandal at Tembisa Hospital, implicating multiple criminal syndicates in the misappropriation of public healthcare funds.
The investigation, initiated in 2021 following whistleblower Babita Deokaran's revelations, has identified at least three coordinated networks involved in the illicit activities.
One of the main criminal syndicates is connected to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who is reported to be a nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Investigators found that Maumela’s network funneled more than R816 million through 1,728 separate purchase orders, effectively bypassing normal procurement controls.
Maumela's associates, including convicted criminal Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, are also implicated, with Matlala's companies receiving nearly R15 million in fraudulent payments.
The SIU's interim report reveals that officials at the hospital used fraudulent documents and manipulated procurement processes to bypass tender regulations, keeping transaction values under R500,000 to avoid scrutiny.
This deliberate splitting of orders violated the Gauteng Department of Health's procurement policies.
In response to the findings, the SIU has initiated disciplinary actions against 13 officials, with 116 referrals prepared. Additionally, asset forfeiture proceedings are underway, targeting luxury properties and vehicles linked to the implicated individuals.
The investigation continues, with further arrests and recoveries anticipated as evidence is finalized.
The SIU has pledged to pursue justice relentlessly, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle audits for officials and protection for whistleblowers and investigators.
Anele Mdoda shares disturbing encounter with Uber driver in Cape Town
South African media personality Anele Mdoda recently recounted a distressing experience with an Uber driver in Cape Town.
On the evening of February 23, 2025, Mdoda opted for Uber's "don't talk to me" feature when booking her ride.
This selection reportedly angered the foreign national driver, who allegedly told her, "In my country, we would r**pe you to teach you a lesson."
Fearing for her safety, Mdoda pretended to be on Instagram Live during the ride.
Upon arrival at her hotel, the situation escalated as the driver began shouting at her.
Mdoda recorded part of the encounter and shared it on social media, expressing her distress and highlighting the threat she faced.
The worst thing the ANC can do is celebrate human trafficking in Cape Town & sexual exploitation of poor black girls but the ANC can’t help but shoot itself in the foot… I spoke to @MbalulaFikile about this very issue as soon as he was elected & he lied!
