When a table tennis player puts spin on the ball, something counterintuitive happens: the ball curves away from where it should be going. The physics behind that curve is called the Magnus effect — the way spin redirects a moving object's trajectory by changing the pressure distribution around it.
Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute just observed the same effect happening with light and atoms.
The optical Magnus effect had been theoretically predicted but never experimentally confirmed until now. The team directed a tightly focused laser beam at a single trapped calcium ion and measured where the interaction between the laser and the ion was strongest.
The intuitive answer is: at the center of the beam, where light intensity is highest. But tightly focusing a laser changes the spatial structure of its electromagnetic field — and as a result, the point of maximum interaction shifted sideways, away from the beam's center by a distance of a few hundred nanometers.
A small shift. A significant finding.
For quantum computers that use laser light to control qubits, precision is everything. If the point where laser and qubit interact is not where you think it is, your control operations introduce errors.
The optical Magnus effect, if unaccounted for, is exactly the kind of subtle systematic offset that could silently degrade computation quality without being immediately obvious.
But the finding cuts both ways. As first author Philip Leindecker noted, the forces generated by the effect could also be harnessed deliberately — used to couple qubits to one another in ways that enable more complex computations. A phenomenon that looks like interference from one angle looks like a tool from another.
One detail from the experiment stands out. The magnitude of the sideways shift depends solely on the wavelength of the light — not on how tightly the beam is focused. That's a clean, predictable relationship, which means the effect can be characterised precisely and either corrected for or intentionally exploited.
The calcium ion served as the measurement instrument: a single charged atom held almost motionless in an ion trap, sensitive enough to map the laser's field structure at nanometer resolution. The same architecture used in some of the most advanced quantum computing platforms in the world was what made the observation possible.
A table tennis trick, a theoretical prediction, and a single trapped atom. The first observation of the optical Magnus effect just handed quantum computing researchers something useful to work with.
