Skanderbeg was taken by the Ottomans as a boy, forced to convert to Islam, and trained to serve the sultan.
In 1443 he abandoned their army mid-battle, rode home to his ancestral fortress, and returned to the Christian faith he was baptised in.
He held the mountains against the empire for 25 years and died undefeated. The Pope called him Athleta Christi. Champion of Christ.
