Kids, let me remind you our miserable roots, since you all love to drag GAP unprovoked those days.
Before GAP everything was:
a. Queerbaiting (ahem, Supercorp and BeChloe);
b. Lesbians dying (ahem, Clexa and RootShaw);
c. Lesbians in prison (ahem, OITNB);
d. Lesbians cheating (ahem, Calzona);
e.. Lesbians cheating with men (ahem, Juliantina, Emisue);
f. Lesbians existing to support a hetero protagonist (ahem, SolJiwan, Brittana and WayHaught);
g. Lesbians treating the relationship as temporary, experimental, or a phase (ahem, Sanvers);
h. Lesbians divorcing (ahem, Emison, Calzona);
i. Lesbians written for men's gaze (ahem, Blue is the Warmest Color, Citrus );
j. Doomed yuri (basically 90% of the industry).
Before GAP, lesbian couples on TV often were a side characters with a tragic ending, death, betrayal, stereotypes or the “it was just a phase” storyline.
GAP changed the formula by showing that lesbian love could simply be a complete love story, with them as MAIN characters, real emotions, development, and a happy ending.
So thank you FreenBecky for starting this new era and giving a GL industry its current bright future.
