They went to meet her father so he could come and officiate the wedding. This man said that if the mother—the woman who had left him for 20 years—did not sleep with him, he would not collect the dowry.

The woman didn’t say anything. She simply went and looked for another man to stand in as the father for her daughter that day.

See, these men are bold because some of these traditions were created and maintained by men in ways that can protect male authority even when the circumstances have changed.
