1908 C.B. Macdonald

Macdonald set out on a mission to build a golf course that would resemble the greats of the British Isles. CB found a piece of property on the Peconic Bay of Long Island and with the help of a local engineer, Seth Raynor, the two crafted an architectural masterpiece.

NGLA, weaves you out towards its next door neighbor, Shinnecock Hills, and then back to the clubhouse which sits atop a hill overlooking the Peconic Bay. The holes each have their own personal characteristics - some with massive Sahara bunkers, some with tiny pot bunkers, greens that are plateaued, thumb printed and punchbowled. The fairways are firm and fast, guarded by native fescue areas and the greens roll like table tops.

“National” as it is affectionately called, is as fun to play as any. Each hole tells a new story and the walk out and back is one of the most enjoyable you’ll ever take on a golf course. Today was a dream for me - it was utter bliss. The weather was 65 and sun and just the right amount of wind. If there is a heaven on earth, I believe I was there today.
