DMK MP P. Wilson has written to PM @narendramodi and Health Minister @JPNadda, urging an immediate reduction in the NEET-UG 2026 qualifying percentile.
In All India counselling alone, 4,068 seats reached the stray vacancy round (3,426 MBBS). Even after allotment, 800+ seats remain vacant.
(Note: This is only MCC/AIQ. State quota counselling is separate — a large number of seats remain vacant across states.)
The cut-off rose unusually high after the paper leak, exam cancellation and re-conduct.
General category: 213 (vs 144 last year)
OBC/SC/ST: 177 (vs 113 last year)
Qualified candidates fell from ~12.36 lakh to 11.21 lakh.
These seats cannot be carried forward. Students who would have qualified in previous years are now left out due to the exam disruptions.

For Indian students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad and retain the option of practising medicine in India, qualifying NEET UG is mandatory under the applicable NMC rules. The NEET result is treated as the eligibility certificate and is valid for three years for this purpose. Official NMC guidance
NEET UG 2026 qualifying cutoff:
• General/EWS: 213 marks
• OBC/SC/ST: 177 marks
The sharp rise in the qualifying cutoff has left many aspirants ineligible despite scoring marks that would have cleared the qualifying threshold in previous years. This affects their options for pursuing medical education in India and abroad.
At a time when medical seats remain vacant across counselling rounds, we urge the Government to consider a one-time, evidence-based reduction in the NEET UG 2026 qualifying cutoff. Students who narrowly missed the threshold deserve a fair opportunity to pursue their medical aspirations, subject to applicable admission and regulatory requirements.
This is an appeal for a proportionate policy review—not a demand to compromise medical education standards.

Thousands of MBBS & BDS seats are still vacant across India even after multiple counselling rounds and the stray vacancy round (as of 21 Oct 2026).
At the same time, NEET UG 2026 has recorded its highest-ever qualifying cutoff:
• Gen/EWS: 144 (2025) → 213 (2026) | +69 marks
• OBC/SC/ST: 113 (2025) → 177 (2026) | +64 marks
5-year Gen/EWS minimum trend: 117 → 137 → 162 → 144 → 213
Key vacant seats:
• MCC (All India + Deemed): ~800–960+
• Maharashtra: 1,036
• Rajasthan: 1,039 MBBS
• Karnataka: ~664 MBBS
• Madhya Pradesh: 1,132 (Mop-Up)
• Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Deemed: 824 MBBS
• Uttarakhand: 145
Many students who scored above previous years’ qualifying cutoffs — and would have easily qualified in earlier NEET cycles — are now left out because of this year’s sharp jump. Seats are empty while these eligible candidates remain blocked. This has caused severe mental stress and uncertainty among aspirants.
We request a one-time qualifying cutoff reduction for the 2026 cycle only so that more candidates can participate and these seats don’t go waste.
@MoHFW_INDIA@NMC_BHARAT@JPNadda@PMOIndia@narendramodi #NEETUG2026
Hon’ble Union Health Minister Shri J. P. Nadda ji @JPNadda, thousands of NEET UG 2026 aspirants are waiting for hope, fairness and a decision that recognises their struggles.
We urgently appeal for a reasonable reduction in the NEET UG 2026 qualifying percentile across all categories, leading to lower qualifying marks, in accordance with applicable rules.
With cutoffs reaching 213 for General/EWS and 177 for OBC/SC/ST, students are facing immense mental stress, anxiety and uncertainty after years of preparation, financial sacrifices and family expectations. Behind every score is a young person’s dream, hard work and future.
Sir, students are not just numbers on a merit list—they are the future of our healthcare system. We urge you to review the exceptional circumstances, consider reported vacant medical seats and recommend an appropriate cutoff reduction to expand counselling opportunities for eligible candidates without compromising admission rules.
Please listen to students before their hopes turn into despair. Give NEET UG 2026 aspirants a fair chance, restore hope and protect their future. We request urgent action, not silence.

#NEETUG2026 #NEETCutoffReduction
Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi ji, we sincerely request your intervention regarding the NEET UG 2026 qualifying cutoff.
After the nationwide examination and the subsequent re-examination, students are facing an exceptionally high qualifying cutoff: 213 for General/EWS and 177 for OBC/SC/ST. Many aspirants have missed qualifying by a narrow margin despite preparing for years.
We respectfully request the Government to review the cutoff in light of the unusual circumstances of NEET UG 2026, the number of candidates who appeared, and the availability of vacant MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seats.
A reasonable, evidence-based reduction in the qualifying percentile could give more deserving aspirants an opportunity to participate in counselling and help utilise vacant seats, subject to merit and applicable admission rules.
We appeal to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Ministry of AYUSH and the concerned regulatory authorities to examine this matter urgently and take a student-centric decision.
Please protect students’ futures and give NEET UG 2026 aspirants a fair opportunity.

Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi, Union Health Minister @JPNadda, @MoHFW_INDIA@moayush and @NMC_BHARAT ,
Please consider a one-time, transparent reduction in the NEET UG 2026 qualifying percentile and marks for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH admissions.
📊 THE VACANCY ISSUE CANNOT BE IGNORED
A report published on 21 October highlights 4,068 reported vacant seats across (All India Counselling):
• 3,426 MBBS seats
• 499 BDS seats
• 143 https://t.co/EMt7o7if42 Nursing seats
These figures cover multiple courses and must not be mistaken for MBBS vacancies alone. Nevertheless, they raise an important question: can eligible candidates and vacant seats be better matched through a fair, lawful special counselling process?
📌 WHY STUDENTS ARE REQUESTING RELIEF
NEET UG 2026 was affected by serious examination-related disruption, including the re-examination. Students have endured uncertainty, prolonged stress and repeated counselling developments. Meanwhile, the qualifying threshold is reported at 213 marks for General/EWS and 177 for OBC/SC/ST.
Thousands of aspirants are concerned that the increased qualifying threshold has narrowed their opportunity to participate in counselling, even as vacancies remain.
We are NOT asking for guaranteed admission, a bypass of merit, or compromise on academic standards. We are requesting a fair opportunity to compete for available seats under clearly defined eligibility and counselling rules.
🙏 OUR SPECIFIC REQUEST
1️⃣ Consider a temporary reduction in the qualifying percentile for NEET UG 2026, subject to expert review and applicable regulations.
2️⃣ Consider reducing the qualifying percentile from the 50th to the 40th for General/EWS and from the 40th to the 30th for OBC/SC/ST, if approved by the competent authority.
3️⃣ Examine the remaining MBBS, BDS and AYUSH vacancies separately and publish verified, course-wise and category-wise figures.
4️⃣ Consider a transparent special counselling round for newly eligible candidates, wherever legally permissible.
5️⃣ Issue a clear, timely decision so students can plan their future without relying on rumours or unverified announcements.
This is about balancing merit, public interest, available educational capacity and the future of students who have already invested years in preparing for medical education.
We respect the examination system and the authorities responsible for maintaining standards. We request them to examine the unusual circumstances of NEET UG 2026 and consider a reasonable, evidence-based solution.
Vacant seats and deserving aspirants deserve serious consideration. Please hear the students’ appeal.
