Official today: Capital Weather is independent once again.
Twenty-two years after launching Capital Weather as an independent weather website for the DC area — and 18 years after first partnering with The Washington Post and becoming the Capital Weather Gang — we are independent again.
Today, we’re officially launching a new chapter at https://t.co/r3dKxepf5m and on our new mobile app. We are committed to making our core forecasts and updates free and accessible to everyone. Your support will make this possible.
Here is what we’ve built and how you can support us.
What we’ve built:
☀️ Around-the-clock forecasts and live updates
📧 Expanded newsletters
📱 A new Capital Weather app
🌦️ Interactive weather and climate tools
💬 A stronger community experience
🎙️ We will continue to provide forecasts on WAMU 88.5
How you can boost and sustain our independent launch:
• Support our work at https://t.co/jh1PQK6W7Q
• Download the Capital Weather app on iOS or Android
• Make Capital Weather your everyday weather source
• Share this post with friends and family across the DMV
Some of you have already joined our community and we could not be more grateful.
Since pioneering digital local weather coverage in 2004, we’ve believed weather is something we all experience together. Your questions, storm reports, photos, and conversations have helped shape Capital Weather into one of the nation’s leading regional weather communities.
Our mission remains the same as always: to be the most trusted everyday source for DC-area weather forecasts, breaking updates, and in-depth weather and climate news.
From sunny days to stormy days — and from Snowmageddon (2010) to Snowcrete (2026) — it’s been an incredible ride.
Thank you for being part of this community. We’re incredibly excited for what’s ahead.
Today -- using the astronomical definitions of the seasons -- is the last day of summer! The fall equinox is at 8:43 a.m. Eastern Sunday. Days are rapidly getting shorter. We're losing about 2m and 30 sec per day in DC. (1/2)
The Federal Reserve cut interest rates on Wednesday for the first time since early 2020, the clearest signal yet that central bankers believe they are winning their years long battle against rapid inflation.
Here are the latest updates on the cut: https://t.co/JrUrdI3PRV
Pressed by repeated questions during the press conference, Fed Chair Powell had to navigate the contradiction between the unusual step of starting a cutting cycle with a 50 bp cut and the repeated assessment that “the economy is in a good place.”
This got trickier as, understandably, he didn't want to acknowledge that today’s 50 bp move is a catch-up for not having reduced rates inJuly.

BREAKING: #Beryl is now a Category 5 hurricane, the earliest to reach this top tier strength on record in the Atlantic, fueled by record-warm waters. The previous earliest Cat 5 was Emily on July 17, 2005.
A sobering and ominous development in this young hurricane season.
Today is the SUMMER SOLSTICE at 4:51p -- and the longest day of the year.
Cool fact -- this is the earliest solstice since 1796 because it's a leap year and some related math!

Today's the SPRING equinox - at 11:06p - and official start of season in Northern Hemisphere (although meteorologists prefer March 1 as the start of spring). Because it's a leap year, the equinox is on the 19th -- usually it's on the 20th.

By late this week, we have the same sun angle as late October. Starting to get into sun angle season. You'll notice an uptick in bird chatter over the next couple of weeks. #wbz
And with that, #SolarEclipse2023 has traveled from Oregon to Texas.
Watch the view of the shadow from @NOAA’s #GOESEast as it moves across the Pacific Northwest to the Gulf of Mexico.
Happy #FullDiskFriday! Tomorrow at 2:50 am ET, astronomical #autumn officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere!🥳🍂
To celebrate, here is a time-lapse from @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ showing the change in the angle of the sun from last year’s #equinox through today.

•He announced his team is being verbally abused
•No more hotel rooms available for hundreds of passengers
•A/C has now failed in hour #3 of line
