Honestly, it was true revelation when I figured out that setting up boundaries for myself did not only mean showing people how to love me and take care of me, it also meant doing all that for myself.
Self-discipline is setting up boundaries for healthy habits and routines.
Christ’s church will only suffer if we continue to believe that disciple making is left up to ministers and pastors. Each believer is called to be a disciple. Each disciple is called to be a disciple maker.
What if believing that you’re a fraud is causing you to act like you’re a fraud? What would happen when you start believing in yourself? What would happen when you stop comparing yourself? What if the best and most genuine version of yourself is the one who stopped doubting?
It was a rude realization finding out that “elder emo” is definitely a millennial term after my students reacted in disgust when I referred to myself as one.
Realizing at 12:32am that one of the little reasons I haven't bought merch of the things I'm a fan of is cause I told myself that I'm not enough of a fan to justify the purchase; fearing that I needed to prove myself.
Gatekeeping yourself is a horrible way to live.
We see in the Bible that God used imperfect people all the time. In the eyes of others, they couldn't have possibly succeeded. Yet God made it happen.
So it's not about becoming enough for other people. It's about God always being sufficient for what He wants to do through us.
Being nice enough that people want to protect me has been my method of self-preservation. I’ve seen myself as selfish because of it and considered myself to be in no position to be a pastor.
Then God said, “what an opportunity to learn how to live a life given over for others.”
Ever forget your last bite of cheesecake, and then you get up to put away your dirty dish only to look down and get excited seeing a tiny, blessed surprise?
Just me?
Learning more about the human psyche and getting mentally healthier means, for me, that I need to remind myself more that I don’t need to psycho analyze every single person I meet lol
Continuing the thoughts from last night:
I found myself asking why my youth leaders continue to serve with me when I see myself as so incompetent. Holy Spirit whispered “God is good to you, you have His favor, and you’re not as bad as you think.”
“How have you overcome your insecurities? You seem so confident.”
“I haven’t. God is just really good to me. If He is confident in me, I can move with His confidence even if I don’t have enough of my own.”
Late night thoughts:
I’ve struggled so much with self worth and have fought so much in attempts to overcome that but I’m comforted with the idea that even if it is a lifelong struggle, it can be an opportunity for me to daily encounter God in a very real and tangible way.
Luke’s Gospel shows Jesus’ mission to bring awareness about the realities of God’s kingdom and His criticism on the sin-tarnished values of this world. In Luke 6:20-26 Jesus shows us that our perspective must ever be towards His kingdom instead of this world’s temporal offerings.
