In 1963, the famous photographer Richard Avedon took a picture of a man named William Casby. William Casby, born in 1857, was 106 years old at the time. In his hands, he was holding his great-great-granddaughter, Cherri Stamps-McCray.
The image amazes me because the elderly gentleman holding his descendant so tenderly, was born into slavery more than a century prior. Casby would eventually live until 1970, dying at the age of 113.
His great- and great-grandchildren are alive today, and many of them remember him.
It puts into perspective just how relatively recent slavery existed. Because as faraway and distant as it may feel now. Even in modern-day America, there are people who have active memories of talking to former slaves.

A group of white boys harass, taunt, abuse a black kid for almost two years.
They urinated in a cup, mixed it with apple juice and FILMED themselves making him drink it.
They shared the video online to bully him.
One of the white boys' dads then SUES THE BLACK BOY'S MOTHER for speaking out about it and calling the boys who did it racist.
And he just won $3.2 million.
That is the America we live in.
Fewer than 10 US citizens are killed by undocumented immigrants each year. (Per the FBI)
But ICE/CBP have killed nine so far this month with one more death "under investigation. "
The people ICE has murdered include:
Alex Pretti
Renee Good
Keith Porter
Herber Sanchez Dominguez
Victor Manuel Diaz
Parady La
Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz
Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres
Geraldo Lunos Campos
One "under investigation," not yet named.
ICE is now forcing Native Americans to carry paperwork to “prove” that we’re U.S. citizens.
I grow tired of asking non-Natives, so, this will be the last time.
Did white immigrants aboard the Mayflower have THEIR paperwork when they sailed into OUR country?
ICE has kidnapped Native Americans and put them in an actual concentration camp.
Three members of the Oglala Sioux tribe are being held at Fort Snelling.
ICE has no jurisdiction over Native Americans.
This should be much bigger news.
Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic.
The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.
The #NobelPeacePrize medal.
It measures 6.6 cm in diameter, weighs 196 grams and is struck in gold. On its face, a portrait of Alfred Nobel and on its reverse, three naked men holding around each other’s shoulders as a sign of brotherhood. A design unchanged for 120 years.
Did you know that some Nobel Peace Prize medals have been passed on after the award was given? A well‑known case is Dmitry Muratov’s medal, which was auctioned for over USD 100 million to support refugees from the war in Ukraine.
And the medal displayed at the Nobel Peace Center is actually on loan and originally belonged to Christian Lous Lange, Norway’s first Peace Prize laureate.
But one truth remains. As the Norwegian Nobel Committee states: “Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time.”
A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot.
This CR is a major mistake. Here are my thoughts on this important night.
Donald Trump and his Republican enablers caused the shutdown. And even more egregiously, Trump has gone out of his way to make it worse, most recently by illegally trying to use hungry kids as leverage to compel Democrats into submission. He is hurting people in order to enrich himself, destroy our democracy, and stay in power forever. His actions over the past month confirm this.
Bullies gain power when their misconduct succeeds in causing righteous people to yield in the face of their wrongdoing. That’s why voting for Trump's continuing resolution - without any protection against his health care cuts or his growing illegality - is a mistake.
Last Tuesday, people poured out of their homes and to the polls to reject Donald Trump, but also to urge Democrats to hold firm in our refusal to vote for a short term budget that throws millions of their health care and allows Trump’s corruption to continue, fully funded and unabated.
People know the government shutdown hurts. But people also know that Americans will die when millions cannot afford health insurance next year because of Trump’s massive premium hikes. They wanted us to continue that fight, even knowing that victory was not certain. And 7 million people rushed to the streets last month because they did not want allies of democracy to vote for a budget that puts no significant checks on Trump’s increasing authoritarian behavior. They did not want this outcome.
I understand my colleagues' desire to fund the government. What Trump has put people through these last few weeks is abhorrent. Of course I want to end the shutdown too. But not at any cost.
Standing up to a tyrant who is willing to impose pain in order to compel loyalty or capitulation is hard. Especially for people of good heart who never want to see people suffer. But there is no path to saving our democracy that doesn’t involve hard choices - some that involve enduring pain in the service of proving the demagogue's bullying tactics do not work.
Republicans have said they will discuss putting off the premium increases they set in motion once the government opens. If it does open, I hope they are true to their word. If they are not, and millions suffer as their health care costs double - all to finance a giant tax cut for billionaires and corporations - voters will know who to blame. Despite my deep disappointment at this deal, make no mistake - the evil that is about to be done on families with sick kids and high medical bills lays solely at the feet of Donald Trump and his Republican enablers.
This will not be the last test put to the defenders of democracy. There is no way to sugarcoat this moment. It will have a cost. But it is up to us to keep the fight going. There will likely be even bigger, more consequential moments ahead of us - more chances to stand together against this growing totalitarian inhumanity. The fight isn’t over - by any stretch.
MIT has become the first school to reject the Trump administration’s proposal that offered a select few universities preferential access to federal funds in exchange for agreeing to a set of demands. https://t.co/vgyQDQO08U
Commerce Chair Ted Cruz on Kimmel:
"If the government gets in the business of saying 'We don't like what you, the media have said, we're going to ban you from the airwaves if you don't say what we like,’ that will end up bad for conservatives.”
Jimmy Kimmel gets canceled.
Brian Kilmeade gets... nothing.
Al Franken gets canned.
Trump gets elected President.
The Right chants… "Jews will not replace us!!"
The Left chants… "This is what democracy looks like!!"
Republicans mock the attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband and remain silent on the assassination of Melissa Hortman.
Democrats say they don't agree with Charlie Kirk on many issues but completely condemn any and all violence.
See a pattern here?
When Congress set up independent commissions like the FCC, one reason (as taught in civics) was that they held vast power, and should be in bipartisan hands to forestall abuse.
The administration—with help so far from the Court—rejects the independence while keeping the power.
