Yesterday I wrote to Prime Minister Carney, expressing my concern about his government issuing public statements endorsing a resource extraction project in Manitoba in violation of the rights of affected First Nations and the position of the provincial government.

Research has shown, the current plan for the Sio Silica project risks contaminating clean drinking water sources, which has prompted the Province of Manitoba to deny an environmental license for the project, and which led the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation to vote against it last year. Ignoring these risks and violating his duty to respect these prior decisions, Carney went ahead and welcomed foreign investment in the project at the G7 Leaders Summit last week.

This is yet another deeply disturbing example of Carney’s Liberal government taking huge environmental risks and jeopardizing clean water rights, just like we saw in their Bill C-37 tabled last week. Water is life, and life is not negotiable. The Liberals must stop caving to corporate interests, respect their constitutional obligations and uphold the basic human right to clean water.
