For the first time today, I realized that the problem of Nigeria is not leadership per say, but the opportunists nature of its citizens.

I was scheduled for an appointment at the Russian Embassy Abuja by 11am today, and somehow, I missed my way to the Embassy. Instead of the Russian Embassy, I found myself at the UN Office which had the same structure painting with the Russian Embassy. I checked my time and it was 10:42am. Looking frustrated, I asked for directions and the security guards directed me to a cluster of Taxi Drivers at the opposite side. I crossed to the other side and immediately about five of the Taxi Drivers rushed towards me.

"Oga where you dey go"? They asked simultaneously

"Russian Embassy" I responded

"Ahhhhh! Russian Embassy. E far o" one of the men responded.

"Is about two hours drive from here" the man added

"How much will you take me there"? I asked

"Oga na 30k o" he responded

My heart skip.

I was pleading and negotiating with this man to please accept 20k as I was running out of time but he stood his ground.

A Hausa man hawking orange who was following our conversation, came behind me and whispered in Hausa "Dan dai kana sauri ne, Amman akasama zaka iya zuwa Russian Embassy" (if not because you are in a haste, you can trek to Russian Embassy).

The orange hawker then instructed me to follow him. I checked my time and it was 10:49am.

We trekked few miles, take just two turns and crossed over an overhead bridge. Boom! We are at the front of Russian Embassy.

I checked my time and it was 10:57am. I could not help but hug the man tightly until the orange on his stray start falling. We chatted for few minutes. He told me he came all the way from Ingawa Local Government in Katsina State. I told him I am from Funtua local government in Katsina State. We quickly exchange contact and I dash off.

While waiting for my turn to be invited into the Embassy, my mind traveled back to the Taxi Driver I was desperately begging to accept 20k. Some of us are worse than the leaders we complain everyday about. It's just opportunity we lack.

Nigeria Needs Sound Financial System to Fund Its Development, Says Bagudu

Nigeria needs to pull more resources than it has to fund its development agenda, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu @atikuabagudu , has said.

For this to happen, the nation must develop a sound financial system with integrity, he said.

He spoke at the management retreat of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit in Abuja on Monday.

“Our Agenda 2050, a statement of our national aspiration, requires that we invest at least 100 billion dollars annually to achieve a GDP per capita of $33,000 or more by 2050,” he said, adding, “We are nowhere near that.”

He said the current financing level is smaller than that but explained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had undertaken bold and courageous economic reforms to boost its revenue.

“However, we still need to be where we should be; we are not near the kind of flows we expect,” the minister noted.

To buttress his point, he cited the $20 billion federal budget size, which he said was too small compared with other countries like Brazil and Indonesia, which have similar population sizes and have $750 billion and $210 billion budgets, respectively.

The minister explained that Nigeria needs a sound financial system to attract domestic and foreign investments to finance its development plan.

“The plan is to use private sector or capital market money to fund the plan. Because of that, we need confidence, integrity, and soundness in our financial system,” he pointed out, “The rating agencies could be more generous with us, maybe not only with us but with all countries.”

He stated that this was the role of the NFIU, which he said had performed creditably but needed to communicate its activities more effectively for the public to acknowledge.

The minister said, “Our credit rating should improve. We have taken measures similar to those in countries that have achieved significant increases in credit ratings. We have established institutions and committed institutions, particularly the NFIU, and we should benefit from them.

“Communication matters, so we reinforce and punish wrongdoing while drawing attention to our great work to enhance the integrity and soundness of our financial assistance.”

FG, UNHCR to adopt new strategy in tackling IDPs/Refugee management in Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu @atikuabagudu , has announced the commitment of the Federal Government to adopt new strategies in tackling the challenge of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugee management in the country.

Bagudu said this was necessary as refugees and displacement of persons have become a global phenomenon.

He made this known while receiving in the audience a delegation from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), led by the Commission's Assistant High Commissioner (Operations), Mr Raouf Mazou, in Abuja yesterday.

Speaking, the Minister said the government's strategy would involve enhancing its role in coordinating the financing and planning efforts across Federal, State, and Local governments in Nigeria. This initiative, he said would align with Nigeria’s federal structure and address the critical issues of internal displacement and refugee management.

Bagudu emphasized the Ministry's responsibility to engage with development partners, including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and other UN agencies, who have been instrumental in supporting Nigeria’s initiatives.

"This support is crucial as Nigeria confronts challenges related to internal displacement, exacerbated by regional conflicts and climate change".

Senator Bagudu noted that Nigeria's culture and history deeply value support for those in need, reflecting a strong tradition of compassion rooted in religious and social practices. This tradition underpins the country’s approach to managing displacement and migration challenges, which are increasingly pressing due to resource limitations and environmental factors.

Bagudu stated that "Nigeria’s historical involvement in regional peacekeeping and its current military and financial contributions to conflict resolution underscores its commitment to global and regional stability. This commitment is reflected in ongoing efforts to support displaced persons and refugees, both within Nigeria and from neighbouring countries", he explained.

He also acknowledges the need for more equitable access to capital to effectively address displacement issues. Despite ongoing efforts, the challenge of transitioning from humanitarian aid to livelihood support remains significant, necessitating increased investment and resources.

Bagudu added that Nigeria faces unique challenges related to cross-border migration and resource distribution, particularly in the Sahel region. The Ministry is dedicated to addressing these issues through cooperation with international partners and supporting initiatives to mitigate the drivers of displacement.

Earlier in his emphasised, Raouf Mazou, The Assistant High Commissioner for Operations for UNHCR, highlighted the need for a shift from short-term humanitarian responses to long-term development approaches in addressing forced displacement. "Nigeria's significant refugee and internally displaced populations, the growing trend of long-term displacement, and the necessity of integrating displaced individuals into development plans".

Mazou also suggested utilizing resources and facilities like those provided by the World Bank and collaborating with private sector actors to enhance self-reliance and effective solutions for displaced populations.
