Me explico.⬇️
When Rafa Benítez held his first meeting as Chelsea manager, it took John Terry just a few minutes to realise the pair probably weren't going to get along…
Benítez had arrived at Stamford Bridge as interim manager in 2012.
But according to Terry, his first meeting with the squad didn't exactly win him over.
Benítez began explaining his methods.
“At Liverpool we did this…”
“At Liverpool we did that…”
Terry was sat there losing his head
Chelsea had spent years battling Liverpool in some of the biggest games in Europe.
And Terry's sat there thinking:
“Liverpool won f* all.”**
“We’ve been dominating Premier Leagues, FA Cups, Champions League latter stages.”
Eventually he'd heard enough.
“Gaffer, we don’t speak about Liverpool here.”
“And by the way, we’re the ones who’ve been dominating the last five or six years.”
Terry admits:
“From that moment, we just didn’t get on at all.”
Things eventually boiled over after Chelsea suffered a cup defeat.
Terry remembers Benítez coming into the dressing room afterwards and trying to lift the players.
“Boys, it doesn’t matter. We go again next week. We can focus on the league.”
Terry lost it.
“F***ing doesn’t matter?!”
“It’s a quarter-final of the FA Cup. Of course it matters!”
“Don’t come in here after the game and tell the boys it doesn’t matter.”
Terry started walking towards Benítez.
Benítez started walking towards Terry.
So John Obi Mikel jumped between them and began pulling his captain backwards.
But then, Mikel suddenly changed his mind.
As he was holding Terry back, he let go and went:
“No…go on.”
“Go on!”
Their relationship never really recovered.
Terry later claimed Benítez told Chelsea he couldn't play two games a week anymore.
Two seasons later, Terry played every single minute as Chelsea won the Premier League.
Although judging by Mikel's reaction that afternoon, Rafa surviving the dressing room might have been the bigger achievement.
