The Robert Koch Institute estimates around 9,800 deaths tied to heat since mid-April, most of them elderly.
The figure has nearly doubled since late June and already tops the full-year totals for most years since 2016.
Only about 19% of German households have air conditioning. The country has long resisted it on cost and environmental grounds, and its elderly are the ones paying the bill.
