@RutgersAltRoute A4: Unless the situation necessitates escalation, having a student or students stay after class or meet with me at lunch might be a good way to have a more serious and honest discussion about concerning behavior than around peers #AltRtEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A3: I've spoken on the phone with a family member or over email if there are concerning things happening, but I could do more to use tech or no-tech to link all stakeholders in creating a safe classroom. #AltRtEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A2: Encourage an environment where respect is expected, but when moments that are not respectful, encourage a culture of accountability and transformation to address this harm and prevent it from repeating itself. #AltRtEd#SafeSchools
@Sharlene_Laud@RutgersAltRoute Good question! I frame it w/i a discussion about safe classroom environment, but need to do more to develop space within curriculum for LGBTIA+ and people of color (forgot to mention racism not being tolerated). Difficult to be as inclusive as I'd like as I teach ancient civs
@RutgersAltRoute A5: I think creating a virtual space that showcases student work might be a cool idea! Families can access that space with relative ease (though varies across class/accessibility/etc. lines) compared to the classroom space! Might be an idea for next year! #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A4: Technologies EXPAND what is possible in the classroom, allowing to see what the Colosseum looks like w/o leaving the classroom.
Technologies on the other hand can be distracting, vary across abilities/accessibility issues, etc. It can facilitate distraction. #AltRtEd#EdTech
@Rdene915@RutgersAltRoute@mergeedu That's cool! My personal feeling is that ancient history materials (as a whole from what I have seen) are too focused on emperors/etc. rather than the structure of society, the economic production of society, etc. and finding materials that talk about that stuff is difficult!
@RutgersAltRoute I'm a bit of a luddite at this point and really wonder if learning outcomes would be better without Chromebooks/iPads/phones in the classroom, BUT at the same time, understand how technological capabilities are important for student success holistically.
@FTSD_Donovan @DjuricGianna@RutgersAltRoute I haven't used it yet in class, but my idea would be a rolling thing and I can always address questions that day or the next class period.
@RutgersAltRoute A5: My main challenge is falling into the trap of needing a traditional test/quiz to assess learning, rather providing a space for students to create and show off what they know rather than a test, which highlights what I may not know and might never know #AltRtEd#GrowthMindset
@RutgersAltRoute A4: in social studies, constantly relating our learning to how things are in the world, what may be, how we act in/on the world is key - learning-> practice is the whole point of learning #AltRtEd#GrowthMindset#SocialStudies
@RutgersAltRoute A3: including more opportunities for students to use problem-posing in the classroom, relate material (ancient civ) to modern world, situations, etc. Involve more student analysis of their own growth and how they would learn the most. Ask for more feedback #AltRtEd#GrowthMindset
@RutgersAltRoute A2: empowering students to be responsible for their own learning, encouraging accountability to themselves and those around them, creating an environment safe from homo/transphobia/racism/etc. #AltRtEd#GrowthMindset
