A5: Students can showcase/model/inspire others with their online community-building efforts & their expressions of joy & celebration. They can also use these digital communities to bring guest speakers, performers into the classroom to transform the school space. #literacies

@jvheide 2/2 from my perspective, the critical angle, ahistoricized in the current licks trend, is that it was a clap back to urban bathrooms (a rare fugitive space of youth agency) being out of toilet paper, empty soap dispensers, empty paper towels. #literacies

@MrAleoSays Yes, I find it so frustrating that schools now have the resources and are using digital tools to continue the same traditional, school-sanctioned #literacies they were prior to the pandemic. Maybe not all schools?

A5: The interesting thing is many schools have the digital tools and infrastructure to leverage digital #literacies right now. What is needed is a deeper understanding of pedagogies & practices that leverage tech’s affordances instead of replicate didactic learning with screens.

A5: (3 of 3) I can imagine the exciting possibilities for reframing the typical research paper as a digital piece that incorporates multiple multimodal sources, making an argument for an issue students care deeply about.

A5: (2 of 3) But, we can still make opportunities to teach youth critical literacy practices for reading, writing, designing, creating that they can use in school and beyond as they participate in digital #literacies.

A5: (1 of 3) First, I want to say that I’m sad that after a year of virtual or hybrid schooling, we’re mostly back to school the way it used to be. We had such an opportunity to change how we spend time together, what and how we learn, and what counts as #literacies in school.
