It is with profound sadness and a heart weighed down by grief that I mourn the sudden passing of my beloved brother, Dr. Bashir Jama, PhD, on Friday, 31st July.
Words cannot adequately express the pain our family is enduring. We have lost not only a dear brother, but also a devoted husband and father, a mentor, a trusted confidant, and a man whose humility, wisdom and compassion touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
By profession, my brother was an internationally acclaimed agricultural scientist and development expert. His life's journey was one of excellence and selfless service. From the World Agroforestry Centre (@ICRAF), where he rose to become Regional Coordinator for East and Central Africa, to the United Nations Development Programme (@UNDP) in New York, where he served as Policy Adviser on Agriculture, Bashir dedicated his knowledge and talents to improving the lives of others. He later served as Director of the Soil Health Program at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (@AGRA_Africa) before continuing his distinguished service as Senior Agriculture and Food Security Specialist at the Islamic Development Bank (@isdb_group) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Throughout his career, he championed sustainable agriculture, food security and improved livelihoods for millions across Africa and beyond.
Yet, remarkable as these achievements were, they never defined him as much as his character did. The higher he rose, the more humble he became. He never forgot his roots, always made time for family and friends, and generously shared his knowledge to mentor and uplift others. His success was measured not only by the positions he held, but by the countless lives he touched.
His sudden departure is an immeasurable loss to our family, but we take comfort in the extraordinary legacy of knowledge, service and humanity that he leaves behind.
On behalf of our family, I sincerely thank the many friends, relatives, colleagues and well-wishers for the overwhelming outpouring of condolences, prayers and support during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness, compassion and solidarity have been a great source of comfort to us.
Farewell, my beloved brother. You have completed your race with honour, dignity and distinction. Your life was a blessing, your legacy an inspiration, and your memory will forever remain in our hearts.
May Allah (SWT) grant you Jannatul Firdaus, forgive your shortcomings, widen and illuminate your grave, and reunite us in His everlasting Paradise.
Ameen. Ameen.
