@emwrobin I recommend the paperback version of The Stars Undying. It has a dramatis personae (as well as some other goodies) that is pretty hilarious (like this) & that the other editions don’t have. #thestarsundying#emeryrobin
@AngelaEWeiler@mychal3ts My MIL was a librarian & her rule was: you must read as many pages of the book as old you are (so, if you are 9, you must read 9 pages… if you are 46, you must read 46 pages). If you don’t like it at that point, then you can stop reading & find something else!
@heymrsbond @drdmaclee I don’t think that’s compromising or settling, I think I just had to recognize that I was going to need to balance some things if I wanted to stay in the profession (which I did, for 36 years!) Each person needs to decide what feels right for them. All the best to you!!
@heymrsbond @drdmaclee “Great” seemed like an impossible standard for me after I had kids. I decided, at some point that “doing the best I could with the tools I had” each day was enough. And it turns out, I think my students got what they needed, too. 🙂 💕
@heymrsbond Hmmmm- from my computer I can view the (scanned) Calvin & Hobbes comics & instructions on this doc, but on my phone I can only see the JLC text. Honestly, you can choose any comic (but C & H is filled w/ inferences!). If needed though, maybe go to a comp to copy it/see directions
@heymrsbond I’ve used Calvin and Hobbes cartoons (what is spoken/unspoken), paired w/ a small section of the text we’re reading. Here’s a handout you are welcome to copy from an intro to the Joy Luck Club, but of course whatever you’re reading can work.

@ambernoelle@minjinlee11 She understands that writing to make a living is different than BEING a writer. Some people ARE artists or musicians etc even if they don’t make $ doing these things. Writing is a part of her identity, her make up, how she perceives the world… & that’s just lovely.
@heymrsbond Now that the “emergency” has supposedly gone away (as declared by our state, which I think followed the CDC), the policy has too.☹️
Wishing you & your family the best support possible, as well as a smooth recovery.
@heymrsbond For ex: does this zoom in/unpacking a word, phrase, detail or idea in the evidence? Does it ID or examine a pattern? Does it consider cause & or/effect? Does it synthesize different ideas?) I find this helps Ss reach more depth in their commentary, beyond “this shows my point.”
@heymrsbond A related activity: Sometimes I’ve had Jrs or Srs color code analytical paragraphs (literary or other kinds of claims/arguments), distinguishing various analytical tools used in the commentary. They can do their own or as peer responses.
@heymrsbond AND IT WAS STILL THE HARDEST THING I’VE EVER DONE!! Especially when we taught students virtually and in the classroom at the same time (from March 2021-June 2021). Ugh!
@heymrsbond Because the training was teacher created, it was geared toward both practical and philosophical needs. The Ts (who were on classroom leave) really looked for best practices & do-able activities. All year the very helpful training continued, almost weekly, mostly at the site level
