Sometimes I go get my nails done just so I can be around Vietnamese people and hear them gossip about their friends or that girl who comes in every two weeks to talk about her life while making sure her feet are baby soft

So I go to the salons and wonder - will they make fun of my Vietnamese?
The answer is they never do. They're surprised to hear me speak Vietnamese. Sometimes it is so seemless that it's a few sentences before they even realize it's Vietnamese and not English

When I finish and go to pay, I ask what their names are. I love the sound of their names. They call me Janette. I tell them my Vietnamese name is Thu. They repeat it to help them remember and it comes out sounding like music. I always leave wanting to cry

Sometimes they joke around and say we'll teach each other. I'll come back in two weeks to get my nails done and learn Vietnamese and they'll do my nails and learn English
