A PERSONAL TRIBUTE
OLU JACOBS (1942 – 2026)
I first crossed paths with Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs—fondly known to many of us as Uncle Olu Jacobs—in 1978. A small collective of Nigerian classmates at the London Film School, including Adefolu, George, Femi Aloba, and yours truly, had banded together for our final graduation project. We set out to adapt Amadu Maddy’s novel No Past, No Present, No Future into our diploma film, Trying Times. We were young, ambitious, and eager to carry home tangible proof of our training in the art and technique of cinema from that historic institution.
At the time, Olu Jacobs was a vibrant presence at the nearby Africa Centre in Covent Garden. From that very first encounter, he left an indelible mark on me: a consummate, classically trained actor with a commanding presence, yet generous enough to lead our student production without asking for a fee—his only condition being that we provide him a meal across our three-day shoot. Thanks to his compelling performance, Trying Times earned a coveted spot in the Governors’ Screening, affirming that we were truly on the right path.
One of the most treasured milestones of my career arrived years later through M-Net’s New Directions initiative, an innovative scheme designed to stimulate African storytelling that ultimately helped lay the foundation for contemporary African cinema. I was privileged to serve as director of photography on Twins of the Rainforest, framing Uncle Olu alongside his equally gifted wife, Joke Silva. Their on-screen chemistry as husband and wife was electrifying. The camera never forgets; it remains an unforgettable blessing in my life that I had the opportunity to capture that rare intensity on 16mm celluloid film. The imagery from behind that viewfinder remains etched permanently in my memory. I will forever remember his warm, reassuring smile, that booming baritone voice, and his unwavering instinct to uplift everyone around him, cast and crew alike.
It took extraordinary courage and vision for Uncle Olu to walk away from a flourishing career abroad. He had already established an enviable reputation across British stage, television, and international cinema—working on productions like Pirates under Roman Polanski—yet he chose to return home. At a time when shooting on analogue video seemed absurd to conventional filmmakers, he embraced the nascent Nollywood movement. He weathered every infrastructural limitation, pouring his immense craft and discipline into laying the bedrock of an industry that would command global attention.
They simply do not make them like him anymore. A proud son of the rock, hailing from the rolling hills of Egbaland in Abeokuta, Uncle Olu was honored as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) alongside countless lifetime achievement awards. Yet accolades alone cannot capture the magnitude of his legacy: Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs stands unequivocally as a founding patriarch of modern Nigerian screen performance.
Thank you, Uncle Olu, for gracing my lens in Trying Times and Twins of the Rainforest, and for showing us what it truly means to serve the craft.
Sun re o. Goodnight, Uncle.

Please fact-check me. When President Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, Aliko Dangote had a net worth of $13.5 billion. After two years of Tinubu, Mr. Dangote's net worth is now more than double that at $27.8 billion.
The same or similar happened to Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Femi Otedola, who all saw their wealth grow by at least 25%.
Each of Nigeria's top five banks made record profits this last financial year.
For instance, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GT Bank), Nigeria's largest bank by market share, made a profit of ₦1.1 trillion last financial year, up from ₦367.4 billion in 2023.
Meanwhile, Lagos State's GDP has grown from $100 trillion under Buhari to $259 trillion under Tinubu.
My question, therefore, to Peter Obi, who went on Arise TV to claim that President Tinubu has wrecked the economy, is this: If Tinubu has destroyed the economy, how come your bank, Fidelity Bank Plc, made a record-breaking pre-tax profit of ₦385.2 billion for 2024, representing a 210% increase compared to the ₦124.3 billion recorded in 2023?
You see, Peter, even your own bank is testifying on President Tinubu's behalf!

On Nasir el-Rufai's Allegations Against President Tinubu and NSA Ribadu on Arise TV Today
Today, Monday, 24, 2025, Malam Nasir el-Rufai appeared on Arise Television and accused President Tinubu and the National Security Adviser of being behind his failed ministerial nomination.
Mr. el-Rufai said, among other things, that "the President did not want me in his cabinet."
Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is that President Bola Tinubu nominated Malam Nasir el-Rufai as a minister and, as is constitutionally required, sent his name to the National Assembly for Senate confirmation.
During the Senate confirmation process, the National Assembly requested security clearance from both national and international security and intelligence agencies, and it was discovered that Nasir el-Rufai failed his security screening woefully.
He was considered a diplomatic liability to Nigeria because, on Thursday, February 7, 2019, Malam Nasir el-Rufai threatened European Union observers with death if they intervened in Nigeria's impending Presidential elections, which were to take place on Saturday, February 16, 2019.
On that day, Mr. el-Rufai said:
"We are waiting for the person who will come and intervene. They will go back in body bags because nobody will come to Nigeria and tell us how to run our country."
So strongly did the European Union view this threat that they wrote officially to the Government of Nigeria to protest and issued a public statement censuring Nigeria.
Malam Nasir el-Rufai was also fingered as a major contributor to the genocide of Southern Kaduna Christians after he admitted on multiple occasions to paying killer herdsmen while he was Governor.
Thirdly, Nasir el-Rufai's government was indicted in the Zaria Shiite Massacre of Saturday, December 12, 2015, where 438 Shiite men, women, children and infants were slaughtered in one of Africa's worst human rights violations.
Additionally, Mr. el-Rufai was specifically cited for demolishing the homes of his political opponents in Kaduna.
For example, he demolished the home of Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi and Inuwa Abdulkadir, the then North-west Zonal Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, who was an ally of Nasir el-Rufai's political foe, Senator Shehu Sani.
Then, there is the demolition of another critic's home under the guise that the house hosted a sex party. It was later established that the so-called sex party was a prank, and the prankster was not even the owner of the building. Yet, the el-Rufai regime destroyed Aisha Yakubu's home.
Finally, his reckless utterances against Christians, whereby on Saturday, January 27, 2013, he insulted Jesus Christ, and on Friday, January 18, 2019, when he said, 'Even if I bring the Pope, Christians will never vote for me'.
For these and other reasons, Malam Nasir el-Rufai failed his security clearance and could not be cleared by the Senate of the National Assembly. He has himself to blame for this, not the President or the NSA.
Nigerians may recall that el-Rufai was not the only ministerial nominee who was refused clearance. Nasir el-Rufai and two others, including Danladi Sani, the Taraba state nominee, and Stella Okotete of Delta state, were rejected because security agencies refused to clear them.
None of the others has blamed the duo of the President or his NSA. None. Except el-Rufai.
Thereafter, el-Rufai withdrew his nomination and named his former Commissioner for Local Government, Jafaru Sani, as his replacement.
Nasir el-Rufai is bitter that his desire to be a minister was scuttled, and in his bitterness, he is attacking those who are bringing betterment to Nigeria.

Nasir el-Rufai is just being clever by half in expressing his frustration at not being made a minister by attacking the funding of a rail project in Lagos by the Federal Government.
Under Buhari, Nigeria took out a $2 billion loan to build a railway in Niger Republic. Did el-Rufai complain then? Not at all! Today, that same Niger is now hostile towards Nigeria.
If we can build a railway worth $2 billion (which was 10% of Niger Republic's GDP as at then) for a foreign country, simply because General Buhari's father was from Niger Republic, why shouldn't the Federal Government contribute towards building a railway in Lagos State?
After all, 8% of Nigeria's population lives in Lagos, while 35% of our GDP comes from Lagos, which contributes ₦44.17 trillion to our economy. How much does Niger Republic contribute to our GDP?
Did the Federal Government under Jonathan not also spend $1.2 billion building the Abuja-Kaduna superfast 187-kilometre railway?
Did el-Rufai register a complaint then? Even el-Rufai himself used government money to pay herdsmen not to kill (they collected the money and increased the killing). But he does not want government money to go towards building infrastructure to benefit Nigerians?
Secondary schools are constitutionally the responsibility of the Federal Government, yet under Jonathan, the Federal Government spent $769 million in building 165 Almajiri Schools in every northern state. Why did El-Rufai not complain then? Why only complain now that the Federal Government is contributing towards a rail project in Lagos State, Nigeria's commercial capital?
Losing out on being a minister should not make you so demented that you begin to attack a government you once begged to be a part of.

Peter Obi Lied: There Is No Subsisting Court Judgment Ordering Nnamdi Kanu's Release
Peter Obi lied. There is no subsisting court order ordering Nnamdi Kanu's release from DSS custody. And the comparison that Obidients make between Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, AKA Igboho, is propaganda. Their cases are not the same.
Contrary to Peter Obi's claims, in a unanimous ruling on December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that Nnamdi Kanu had a case to answer for treason. After that, on May 20, 2024, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ruled that Nnamdi Kanu should be denied bail. If Peter Obi or any of his Obidients can show a subsequent court order made countering the Supreme Court's judgment of Friday, December 15, 2023, or the Federal High Court's order on Monday, May 20, 2024, I will pay the first person to produce that judgment $10,000.
Failing that, Mr. Peter Obi is counselled to stop spreading IPOB propaganda that a subsisting court judgment orders the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
The difference between Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu is that whereas Nnamdi Kanu made public broadcasts instructing his supporters to kill officers and men of Nigeria's military and paramilitary forces, and thereafter, unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra did kill over one hundred security personnel in the Southeast, Sunday Igboho did no such thing.
Sunday Igboho was declared wanted by the Buhari administration for the act of waging a militia war against Nigerian herders of Fulani background in parts of Oyo State on the accusation that they were behind d the spate of kidnappings for ransom in the area.
When he was apprehended in Benin Republic, Sunday Igboho took the Beninoise Government to court and, on October 9, 2023, defeated them in court and secured his freedom. He thereafter left Benin Republic for Germany and, on December 5, 2023, defeated the Benin Republic Government again in the ECOWAS court, which ordered Benin to pay him 20 million CFA.
The Nigerian Government did not free Sunday Igboho. A Beninoise court freed him, and was then further protected by the ECOWAS court. He and Nnamdi Kanu are not in the same class.
Now, watch as they insult me, because they cannot fault the facts I have presented.

Dear Fred,
Thank you for your feedback. Well, you may be correct. But why don't we let the facts guide us? It is a fact that Lagos State has an internal GDP of roughly $100 billion. It is a fact that of that amount, the Dangote Refinery accounts for $19 billion. Other Dangote Group assets account for another $3 billion. It is also a fact that Abdulsamad Rabiu's group of companies accounts for another $2.5-3 billion. Dr. Mike Adenuga's investments in Lagos total $1.5 billion.
Then you have private sector investment totalling $4 billion at the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Port under Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited, of which the owners are from the Southwest, Northwest and foreign expatriates.
Then there are Flutterwave, with a $3 billion market capitalisation, and Angela, with a market cap of $1.5 billion.
Then you have Nestlé, Nigerian Breweries, Nigerian Bottling Company, Guinness Nigeria, now owned by Tolaram of Singapore, Lafarge Africa Plc (owners of West African Portland Cement company), the Elizade Group, Honeywell Flour Mills, AICCO, Leadway Insurance, the Yinka Folawiyo Group, Nestoil, Forte Oil, and Oando, which have a combined worth of $15 billion.
Now, Fred, I just listed more than 50% of Lagos's GDP, and as much as we love and appreciate you, our brothers and sisters from the Southeast, not one person from that geopolitical zone is included.
As such, do you still stand by your assertion that "most investments in Lagos are owned by Igbos"? It may be that I have the wrong data set, and you have more accurate data. In which case, can you please help me update my knowledge by providing data to substantiate your assertion?
Thanks again, and may God bless you.

I appeal to Peter Obi not to interfere in the matter of the clash soldiers had with traders at Banex Plaza yesterday. He is urged not to take sides. When the soldiers were attacked and beaten by the traders, Peter Obi said nothing. It is hoped that he will be mindful of his position as a statesman in the Nigerian project and maintain his dignity by not politicising this matter, as it has now emerged that many of those traders are Obidients and supporters of his Presidential ambition.
The Nigerian Armed Forces, and especially the Nigerian Army, have, over the years, demonstrated that they are the most united and stabilising force in the country. To a large extent, they are the guarantors of the Nigerian state. For anybody to attack them, they attack the core of Nigeria. And there will be consequences to deter future infractions.
Qualified people are looking into the matter, and law and order will prevail. Therefore, we ought to allow the civil and military authorities to conduct their investigations (thankfully, we have video evidence) and put Nigeria's corporate interests before any regional or commercial interest.
Soldiers MUST be respected in Nigeria. These are people who sleep out in the open to defend us from terrorists, secessionists, militants, and bandits. When you see them, hail them. They are Nigeria's power. If they come to the markets to buy goods and services, appreciate them by giving them discounts. The reason you sleep at night is because they are awake in the wee hours of the day.

The Oppressive Monopoly That May Soon Consume Nigeria
Right now, the headquarters of corruption in Nigeria is MTN Nigeria Limited.
Does it not amount to conflict of interest for the former head of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Ernest Ndukwe, who still has his loyalists in the NCC, to be not just on the board of MTN Nigeria Limited, but also the board Chairman? Where else on Earth can this anomaly be tolerated?
Even in South Africa, MTN's home country, such a travesty would not be accepted. For a foreign company engaged in cannibalistic exploitation of its competitors to pick as its Chairman of the board the former CEO of the public corporation that regulates the industry. This is why South Africa is presently prosecuting Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for unfair competition because WhatsApp is allegedly unduly suffocating South African companies, GovChat and #LetsTalk.
South Africa's Competition Commission is not allowing Meta to do in their country what we allow MTN to do in Nigeria.
Not done with such brazen antitrust practices, MTN appointed the former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, as a board member. Imagine the conflict of interest here. No wonder they had the guts to unilaterally charge other telecommunications providers interests on tax that they had no business collecting. Because they have inside men giving them insight.
Who is actually the Government of Nigeria? Is it the one headed by President Bola Tinubu, or the alternative government led by MTN's board? Because when any organisation starts imposing and collecting tax on others. It has become a government.
The government of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu ought to look into this corporate corruption. The President is an accountant. He must be familiar with antitrust and how it destroys healthy competition and fosters monopolies.
You cannot have a company which has been officially branded a dominant and hostile monopoly by Ghana, a neighbouring country, now taking advantage of Nigeria's weak regulatory regime by packing its board with former heads of critical regulatory agencies, who have an undue advantage with the regulators and can influence them against Nigeria's interest and for the benefit of MTN.
Not only have they sunk their fangs deep into the state and created their own deep state, which is a swamp that needs to be drained, where regulators are undermined and no longer independent, they have even undermined our legal system by having a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Mahmoud, on their board.
The government should ask themselves whether or not it is in Nigeria's interest for a former minister with regulatory authority over telecoms on the board of MTN. Imagine that these individuals approach their former subordinates in these Ministries, Depts and Agencies and ask them to bend the rules in favour of MTN. What does the government of Nigeria think will happen?
Special Adviser Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, complained about moles in the civil service feeding official secrets to the opposition and other outside parties. It is because of practices like the shenanigans MTN is engaged in, that this is possible.
Is it not because of practices like this that the United States moved against Microsoft for antitrust violations in the US v. Microsoft Corp.
MTN's undermining of the system is too brazen. Too brazen. Imagine having Omotola Johnson, a Minister of Communication Technology, on the MTN board.
What is the definition of antitrust? Actions of a corporate entity that prohibits fair competition and promotes monopoly. MTN is the classic dictionary definition of antitrust violations, and the Nigerian government will do well to intervene now, like Ghana, which fined MTN $773 million for similar practices, before this behemoth becomes bigger than the government. We have heard of Banana Republics. May Nigeria not end up as a Telecom Republic!
The Naira is now the world's best performing currency, bar none, according to global investment bank, Goldman Sachs.
In the Northwest, bandits are now being kidnapped themselves by our military and are being tried and imprisoned. (Buhari never sent any bandit to prison).
Every weekday is now a working day in the Southeast. Sit at home has turned to sit in the office!
Boko Haram is now reduced as a threat in the Northeast.
The coastal highway is becoming a reality, and the Abuja metro is now ready for commissioning.
Fuel importation has reduced by more than 50%.
The Dangote and Port Harcourt Refineries are crashing the price of diesel and by May, Premium Motor Spirit will follow.
The Federal Government has negotiated direct Lagos-London flights for Air Peace.
Our GDP is now growing at 3.4%
And passport shortages are now a thing of the past, as Nigerians now get their passports quickly and easily.
Say what you will about Tinubu, but you cannot deny that the President is gradually making us feel proud to be Nigerians again. If God spares my life, my party and I will challenge him in 2027. Until then, I will commend him when he does well. And he is doing well. One year of Tinubu has brought more progress to Nigeria than eight years of Buhari. Emi ni mo sobe!

Happy birthday to my boss, the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT. The virtues of unmatchable political sagacity, downright doggedness, sheer hardwork and an extraordinary leadership acumen have catapulted this enigma from humble beginnings to dizzying political heights.
I can only wish our President many fruitful years ahead in good health and the Wisdom of Solomon to continue to pilot the affairs of this nation.
Dear Peter Obi,
Two days ago, the Naira made its most significant appreciation in the last one year, going over ₦240 in value over the Dollar within 24 hours, and you said nothing. The Nigerian Stock Exchange gained a record ₦2.1 trillion in just 24 hours, moving from an All Share Index with a total market capitalisation of ₦59.416 trillion, up from ₦57.293 trillion on Thursday last week. You also said nothing. The Port Harcourt Refinery has been revived after many years of being moribund. You were quiet.
But when two female undergraduates of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, died from a stampede yesterday, you chose to speak and rather than commiserate with the families of the victims, you decided to politicise their deaths to further your 2027 Presidential campaign. Don't you think this is a new low, even for you? Are you only happy when evil things occur?
And you sought to lay the blame on the Federal Government. Was the Federal Government to blame when almost twenty people lost their lives in a stampede in Anambra in 2013 when you were Governor? Were they also to blame for the hundreds of young Anambra men who were extrajudicially killed under your watch and their bodies dumped in the Ezu River?
Desperation is dangerous as it can lead a hitherto right thinking man to take action and make utterances that he would never have even considered were it not for the desperation.
That is why you were silent when the brothers, Chinedu and Omama, were burnt to death by a mob in Onitsha. You said nothing. You did not condemn it. You did not call for the arrest of the perpetrators. You pretended not to hear about it. But now that two female undergraduates died in Nasarawa, it is time to shed crocodile tears!
This is the holy month of Ramadan. Our Muslim brothers and sisters are fasting. It is also the Lenten season. Our Christian brothers and sisters are also fasting. We need unity. We do not need a desperate politician trying to set Nigerians against each other.

In response to the economic hardship, the Lagos State Government:
Increased civil servants salary by 20%
Increased student bursaries by 12.5%
Gave palliatives to Lagos residents
Opened up soup kitchen for the less privileged
Is selling subsidised food to Lagosians
Reduced train and bus fares for the public, and
Made healthcare free for pregnant women
Yet, Lagos has the smallest landmass of any state in Nigeria. What has your own state done with its large land mass and double federal allocation since the removal of fuel subsidy and Naira flotation? You are suffering because of your Governor, not because of Tinubu!
#TableShaker
These protests don't make sense. Take the one in Anambra, for example, where this photo was taken. How can you be protesting Tinubu in Anambra when it is because of Tinubu's policy of fuel subsidy removal that Anambra's federal revenue has increased by 74%.
Anambra's allocation has risen from ₦4.7 billion monthly before subsidy was removed to almost ₦8 billion monthly in 2024. Yet, Anambra's wage bill has not increased. It remains the same. What has the Anambra State Government done with the increased allocation? That is what these Anambra State workers should be protesting about. Not Tinubu that is paying ₦35,000 wage support to federal workers, and giving states palliative in the form of rice and other grains.
Last year, when the Anambra State Government advertised jobs and said 'non indigenes need not apply', did these workers protest?
Before subsidy removal, Nasarawa was receiving ₦4.3 billion monthly federal allocation. After subsidy removal, Nasarawa is receiving ₦12.3 billion monthly. Enugu's monthly allocation went from ₦3.4 billion monthly to ₦6.7 billion. This year, the thirty states are projected to receive ₦5.6 billion. Last year, they got ₦3.3 trillion. And their wage bill has not increased. It remains the same. In addition to this, their Internally Generated Revenue has also increased. Their VAT revenue has also risen.
So tell me, why should you be facing economic hardship when your Governor receives double the allocation he used to receive? Why is the Nigerian Labour Congress not protesting against them? What has your state government done to alleviate your poverty? Why is it only Tinubu you are facing, and leaving your Governor? At least Tinubu is paying ₦35,000 wage support to federal employees. What is your Governor paying?
We will face Tinubu head-on in 2027. If Nigerians vote for us in the Peoples Democratic Party, we can replace him with our candidate. But for now, I personally believe he is doing the right thing with fuel subsidy removal and Naira flotation. You, too, do your part and #GrowNairaBuyNaija

All candidates said they were going to remove subsidies. All, except Kwankwaso, said they would float the Naira. There is very little that a candidate would have done differently from Tinubu. The Naira is not losing value because of Tinubu. The Naira is losing value because of our consumption habits. Please fact-check me. Below is what Nigerians were using the subsidised Naira to buy:
$200 million per annum on Brazilian hair that is, in reality, hair sacrificed in Indian, Vietnam and Cambodian temples. $20 million a day on MTN and Airtel. $1.5 billion annually to gamble with foreign sports betting and gambling apps. £25 million on Scotch whiskey. $75 million on champagne.
