The Washington disaster is finally coming home to roost.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe went to Moscow to persuade Russia to stop the war because Ukraine is on the verge of catastrophic collapse.
It is the clearest admission that the strategy pursued by Washington has failed spectacularly.
After years of escalation, weapons shipments, and empty promises, the same people who helped prolong the conflict are now scrambling to find an exit before Ukraine is devastated beyond repair.

And then there is Iran.
Washington also asked Moscow to pressure Tehran.
The irony is almost impossible to miss. The Trump administration helped create this mess by recklessly following Israel into a confrontation with Iran,and now it needs Russia to help clean it up.

This is what foreign-policy incompetence looks like: create the crisis, miscalculate the consequences, and then quietly beg your adversaries to rescue you from the wreckage.

Please fact-check me: After President Goodluck Jonathan partially removed fuel subsidy, Nigeria's GDP almost doubled and peaked at $514 billion. By 2014, Nigeria was the world's 22nd-largest economy. By 2015, we were the third-fastest-growing economy on Earth.

But when General Buhari reintroduced full subsidy, Nigeria went from the world's third-fastest-growing economy to suffering two recessions, and by the end of Buhari's tenure, our GDP, which was $514 billion in 2014, had shrunk to less than half that.

Some Nigerians tend to be very forgetful. They forget that when we had fuel subsidy, our people faced acute fuel shortages and slept at petrol stations because 25 million litres per day, out of Nigeria's supposed daily consumption of 66.9 million litres, were smuggled out to neighbouring countries.

If you subsidise fuel in Nigeria, the petrol will leave this country for our neighbours.

Under Buhari, Nigeria exhausted our foreign reserves on fuel subsidies, to the point where we could not fund the importation of essential commodities or their local manufacturing.

Nigerians forget that foreign airlines pulled out of Nigeria, and one of the largest grocery stores in the country, Shoprite, pulled out in 2021, along with other firms too numerous to mention.

Two of the world’s largest banks, HSBC and UBS, pulled out of Nigeria citing lack of policy stability over fuel subsidies and FX.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities went on national strikes for a total of 628 days under Buhari because the Federal Government couldn't pay lecturers a living wage. And why was that?

Because as of 2022, the Buhari administration was spending ₦18.397 billion per day on fuel subsidies for a total of almost $10 billion per annum. And while the government was spending ₦18 billion each day on fuel subsidy, it was only spending ₦2.7 billion per day on education.

After President Tinubu has added $67 billion to our GDP in just two years, and resolved all of these challenges in Nigeria, by ending fuel shortages, making Nigeria the largest exporter of petroleum products in West Africa, fixing the FX regime and stabilising the Naira thereby making the Nigerian Stock Exchange the most profitable on Earth, bar none, according to Bloomberg, ending ASUU strikes, and making Nigeria the top destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa, you want to bring back fuel subsidy?

Really?

This is not about political parties or individuals. This is a patriotic call to action. The only thing that can happen if Nigeria returns to fuel subsidies is the economic destruction of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

You’re either foolish or you simply despise the people of this country. The majority of Nigerians never truly benefited from the fuel subsidy. While ordinary citizens spent hours in queues and often found no fuel to buy, people like you made fortunes from the so-called subsidy.

We all know that the petrol subsidy, originally meant to keep prices affordable, instead became a major vehicle for elite enrichment, rent-seeking and the waste of public funds. Former EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa documented that fraud under the Petroleum Support Fund scheme between 2006 and 2012 exceeded ₦68 billion (over $450 million) involving dozens of companies, with the worst excesses occurring in 2011. Only limited recoveries and a handful of convictions followed, including cases of multi-billion-naira “ghost” claims. So, tell us whose side are you? Shame on you!

US TREASURY SECRETARY SCOTT BESSENT yesterday made a bizarre threat to isolate the world if it did not adopt Washington’s new round of sanctions against the Iranians. Details will be released today.

- “And any nation that serves as a financial artery of a withering regime should expect to share in its isolation,” he wrote in a lengthy rant published in the Financial Times.

- More than half the world’s nations (100-plus countries) do business with Iran, including big ones such as China, India, Pakistan, Turkey and Russia.

All countries must choose between the US or Iran, Bessent said, and poverty will be the punishment for those who fail to choose Washington.

The fate of “those who tether themselves to Tehran is the foreclosure of any path to lasting prosperity”, he said.

EXTREME SANCTIONS
All countries must stop immediately all business with Iranians, Bessent insists, with details of extreme sanctions to be announced this morning.

“The world should understand that our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone … As a great wave of American resolve comes ashore, are Iran’s enablers willing to wager their future against it?” he wrote.

“At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary,” his essay said.

In Pentagonspeak, nations designated as “targets” are described as “adversaries”.

But Bessent gets one thing right. He says “a corrupt regime has consigned what would be one of the world’s strongest economies to ruin”. Which is, of course, a good description of how the US has at least tried to demolish a thriving country with a proud history.

ALL SIDES WANT US ATTACK TO STOP
In 1953, the US famously removed Iran’s democratically elected leader and replaced him with a CIA-MI6 puppet who would channel the country’s oil wealth into US and UK pockets.

Iranians complained about this, and the US responded by slapping them with 47 years of unfair sanctions.

More recently, the US launched an illegal war on Iran at the behest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 28, starting with the killing of more than 100 children at a primary school.

Most people around the world—including in the United States—want the US to end its attacks on the country, but US President Donald Trump has threatened the destruction of “a whole civilization”.
