General Vishwa Nath Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, ADC (Retd) former Chief of the Army Staff, passed away at 4:10 am in New Delhi today, 31 July 2026. He was 96.
General Sharma was commissioned into the 16th Light Cavalry in June 1950. In his four decades of distinguished military service, he participated in the 1965 and 1971 Wars, commanded the 66th Armoured Regiment and a mountain brigade in an insurgency-affected area, and served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command.
In 1988, he became the first officer commissioned into the Indian Army after Independence to be appointed the Chief of the Army Staff, serving until 1990.
Born on 04 June 1930, General Sharma belonged to one of India’s most distinguished military families. His father, Major General Amar Nath Sharma served as the Director General of the Armed Medical Services . His elder brother, Major Som Nath Sharma, PVC, was posthumously awarded Independent India’s first Param Vir Chakra for his supreme gallantry at Badgam in the First Kashmir War 1947-48.
His other siblings - Lieutenant General Surindra Nath Sharma served as Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, and Major Dr Kamla Tewari née Sharma of the Army Medical Corps.
The family hailed from Dadh village in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. The three Sharma brothers studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and further at the Prince of Wales’ Royal Indian Military College, now the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun.
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 A lifetime devoted to the nation and a family whose service to India became a tradition across generations.
Rest in Honour, General.

The misuse of criminal machinery against Ruchika Singh is unacceptable. Profanity does not attract criminal case. 50% of Lok Sabha MPs have criminal cases against them, close to 100 MPs in the BJP. The Police can focus their energy towards them, not a 25-year old! Harassment of the young must STOP immediately!
Jinks, congratulations on a great career, buddy. You’ve done wonders for Indian cricket, and you can be very proud of your journey. The safest pair of hands in the slips and my favourite Test batting partner. Wishing you well always. God bless. 🤝🇮🇳

The Supreme Court cannot be politicised for government’s gains. Its orders cannot be weaponised to achieve those gains. A solemn guarantee was given before the nation. Those ought to be honoured. All FIRs ought to be withdrawn. If criminals roamed, police must apply for cancellation of bail in their old cases. Must also answer why they were roaming so freely in society. But government can’t use this excuse to pursue FIRs so it can later target genuine protesters. If given this leeway, the government will, of course, use it.
The youth will NOT accept this at any cost! We will stand with each and every protester who stood up for each other’s future!

Remember the truck full of stones that appeared near the CJP protest site in Jantar Mantar?
@ImAvdheshkumar traced the vehicle with its registration number. It was not a stray truck: the Delhi Police had seized it four days earlier

Delhi Police denied but RAF fired pellet gun at protesters on the directions of a Delhi Police officer, general diary entry at Parliament Street police station, accessed by The Hindu shows.
It says that to control the crowd during Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest on July 20, “on the orders of the DCP,” the RAF Deputy Commandant fired 55 rounds of non- electrical shell, 15 rounds of electrical shell, five tear smoke granite, two rounds with plastic pellets from an anti-riot gun.

When @Wangchuk66 was detained, the BJP IT cell called us anti-national, Chinese agents, foreign-funded, and every other label they could manufacture.
Today, because we called the Congress' protest at PM's residence insincere, Congress trolls are calling us Sanghis, RSS and BJP stooges.
Different flags. Same playbook. The rot has infected our entire political culture.
India needs more than just a change of government. It needs a change in the very grammar of politics, where disagreement is met with dialogue, not demonisation; where patriotism is measured by integrity, not party affiliation; and where truth matters more than tribal loyalty.

🚨STATEMENT
We are deeply concerned by multiple reports reaching us of students and other protestors being targeted, detained, or arrested by various state agencies, particularly in Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The Cockroach Janta Party had called off its nationwide protest only after the Government of India assured us that no punitive action would be taken against any protestor, either now or in the future, in any BJP-ruled or NDA-ruled states. The reports emerging from these states are therefore a matter of grave concern.
First, we wish to assure every protestor that our legal team is already coordinating with brilliant lawyers in the concerned states to secure the release of those detained and to extend all possible legal assistance. This has been happening from Day 1.
Second, we call upon the Government of India, particularly @JPNadda ji and @DrJitendraSingh ji, to immediately honour the assurance given to us by ensuring the release of those detained and by directing that no coercive or retaliatory action is taken against any protestor anywhere in the country. The FIRs registered ought to be withdrawn too.
The Government of India is also reminded of its commitment to furnish us the written guarantee in this regard by tomorrow, Tuesday, 28 July 2026.
Our decision to suspend the nationwide protest was taken in good faith and solely on the basis of the government’s assurance that it would stand by its word. Any departure from that assurance would not merely amount to a breach of trust with the Cockroach Janta Party but would also be a breach of public trust with lakhs of young Indians who chose dialogue over protests.
Such breach of trust will be completely unacceptable to the youth.
The Government of India is reminded that it derives credibility not from just making a promise, but from the promises they honour.
To the young protestors we say, hold on. We are with you. The CJP continues to closely monitor the situation and expects the Government of India and all BJP/NDA state governments to act with utmost urgency, responsibility, and good faith that the present circumstances demand. We demand that all detainees/arrestees be released immediately, and in any case by tomorrow, and that all FIRs be withdrawn immediately, failing which we shall take further necessary steps.

Again, Noida channel anchors, the IT cell and their affiliates seem convinced they can discredit Gen Z by circulating videos of student leaders partying after Pradhan’s resignation. But to many young people, grabbing a cold coffee, partying or unwinding isn’t a moral failing. A generation that can wear a lathi charge as a badge of honour also doesn’t believe activism requires perennial performative misery. They can protest fiercely, laugh loudly and celebrate victories- all at the same time. That isn’t hypocrisy. It’s their worldview. Just not a Victorian one like that of Noida anchors.
