So it's not intrinsically a fad or a sign of opportunism that there are suddenly a huge number of startups all doing AI. There were simply a huge number of almost solvable problems that have now become solvable.
”So if you’re designing a language, don’t just copy C. Don’t just copy C++ or Java. Hell, don’t even just copy Python or Ruby.”
Let’s stop copying C / fuzzy notepad https://t.co/gmGKKkRPbe
So, apparently you can get your #raspberrypi into a boot loop by enabling watchdog with too large a timeout (120s). Luckily the dog can be disabled just by editing /boot/config.txt with another machine.
New from me: a survey of type system approaches to memory safety. Looks at:
- Linear and affine types
- Borrow checking
- Region-based memory management
- First and second class references
- Rust, Val, Austral, Verona, Ada, Cyclone

A post I wrote on the reaction to Amazon Prime Video's recent blog on moving from serverless to monolith.
I try to unpick the aftermath and then get a bit grumpy about how serverless oversold itself.

Oh dear @Apple , it’s a bit of a pain trying to implement a Homekit bridge when
1) HAP specification doesn’t seem to be available anymore and
2) the example JSON in the spec I already have is INVALID!
It wasn't until I'd *taught* algorithms a few times that I finally understood why sorting is in the CS curriculum. Unfortunately, most curricula don't explain this!
It is NOT because sorting is an important algorithm to learn to implement...
Our latest work in @Nature today: #AlphaDev discovered a new faster sorting algorithm that we open sourced to the main C++ library for all developers to use. This is just the beginning of AI being used to find many more efficiencies in code in future https://t.co/tfACG2zcN6
It's very trendy to argue that microservices are a bad idea right now. Here's my contribution. If you are at all cost-sensitive, try a well-engineered monolith on one big server. Read more here:

Not only is Bitcoin an ecological disaster, it’s a hustle, a ponzi scheme, a gift to criminals, and just stupid. There are so many useful ways to spend energy.
