Alice Waters' carnitas: cube pork shoulder, cover with water, add salt and lime. Simmer 'til tender. Boil off water and fry in fat. Amazing.

Another fun thing about State Bird Provisions: front-of-house manager Mary used to live in Chicago. Worked at Spring and Green Zebra!

At State Bird, the dim sum approach is fun, but the food would be good no matter how it's served.

State Bird Provisions in SF has inspired me to dust off this old account. One of the most revelatory meals in awhile. Wow!

Had Golden Boy pizza for the first time last night. It's the SF version of Rocky Rococo's!

Picked up some great bottles at Hendry in Napa. Also had a tour with owner/vintner/winemaker. Spent 3 hours there. http://twitpic.com/5o8mgf

Had a great day in wine country! Tour/tasting at Hendry, lunch at Redd, then dinner at a friend's parents' friends' house in Healdsburg.

Our Whole Foods has a huge selection of locally roasted coffees! We're drinking Philz Soooo Good at home right now. So good, indeed.

Just finished a phenomenonal brunch at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford. Delicious food and million-dollar views. http://twitpic.com/5a8ge3

Had an excellent experience at Aria in Las Vegas, including dinner at Sage — near-flawless food and service, great wine; the whole package.

@jgbuchel I forgot about that book! I'll have to revisit it :-)

The section on pan-frying in Alice Waters's "The Art of Simple Food" comprises perhaps the best two pages of any book I've read. Essential.

The 2011 edition of "100 Things to Try Before You Die" is out! What are your favorites? http://bit.ly/estRFC (via @ajcrane)

Gorgeous label on this bottle of Fleur Carneros Pinot Noir. The wine is excellent too :-) http://twitpic.com/3wzlmj

Made asparagus tonight using one of my favorite (simple!) techniques: toss in olive oil, season with salt and pepper, then broil for 5 mins.

I just spent two days in Seattle. Food highlight was the excellent pizza at Serious Pie. Light, flaky, almost pastry-like crust. cc @shobe

Just tried the excellent new Contraband Coffee in SF's knob hill. I'm so happy to have a high-end coffee bar close to home!

Finally made it to Frascati in Russian Hill tonight after 11 months living in the neighborhood. Excellent food and great atmosphere.
