MMS govt introduced the 6th pay commission in 06 leading to largest single rise in salaries for the Indian salaried class 40% (180% for Sr Gov Officers).
The BJP criticized it heavily because the then BJP intellectuals were worried about rising inflation (you can google this). /1
“It was a difficult shot,” photographer Joan Monfort told The Athletic. “We can say I sweated some blood to take it."
In December 2007, Monfort took a photo of a 20-year-old Lionel Messi, who had begun his Barcelona career just over three years earlier, and Lamine Yamal — who was five months old.
It was published in a 2008 charity calendar organised by Barcelona’s club foundation and newspaper Diario Sport, with the money raised going to UNICEF and other charities around Catalonia.
As part of a yearly initiative back then, members of the Barcelona squad were photographed alongside children. Hundreds of families collaborated, and most of the photos have now been forgotten, beyond the treasured private memories of those who took part.
It just so happens that Yamal, Barca’s star of the future, was paired with Messi, who would go on to win the Ballon d’Or eight times.

Delighted to see Bengal celebrating Shyama Prasad Mookherjee. But for what reason? 🤡
The Archives, University of Southampton holds a record titled - Letter from Dr S.P. Mookerjee to the Viceroy of India, advocating the partition of Bengal between India and Pakistan, 2 May 1947.
In the letter, he wrote :
"Whether division of India takes place or not, it is essential that the Punjab and Bengal should be partitioned. I shall not say anything about the Punjab in my letter, as her representatives must have placed full facts before you already. I shall deal with Bengal only."
It is noteworthy that, in February 1947, the Hindu Mahasabha under Mookerjee formally put forward the demand for dividing Bengal on religious grounds.
However, there existed another front led by Suhrawardy, Sarat Bose, and Kiran Shankar Roy, proponents of a United Bengal, independent of both India and Pakistan.
Suhrawardi argued the Bengal remained economically backward because of the presence of a large number of non-Bengali businessmen who exploited the people of the region for their own benefit (Which remains as it is even today).
Basically, Suhrawardi realised it would be disastrous for east Bengal if Partition happens. Becoz it will take away the jute mills, coal mines and the then commercial capital Calcutta would go to the western part.
And it happened.
If one trace, the pinnacle moment of Bengal's communal tensions, it was 1932 British communal award of seperate electorate. This gave more seats in the Legislative Council to Muslims than Hindus.
Moreover, after Poona pact (forced) between Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar, Dalits (Depressed class then) too received political representation.
The representation of depressed class deeply disturbed the then Bengali caste-hindu intellectuals including Tagore.
Tagore who was basically an elite upper-caste zamindar, who wrote teary-eyed writings on the peril of Depressed class (Dalit), was deeply disturbed when the question of actual Dalit political representation emerged, and even wrote against it then.
This followed the 1937 election when the Krishak Praja Party (KPP) and the Muslim League formed a coalition government in Bengal.
Political scientist Bidyut Chakrabarty in his book, ‘The Partition of Bengal and Assam,1932-1947: Contour of freedom’ writes that the new coalition govt took a number of legislative steps to improve the condition of the Muslims in the state.
“In a situation where Muslims constituted a majority but lived under the socio-economic condition of the Hindu majority, any attempt to improve the conditions of the former was bound to provoke opposition from the Hindus....Hindu politicians both within and outside the legislature characterised them as well-engineered devices to squash the Hindus."
What made the situation worse was the call for Direct Action Day in 1946 by Jinnah which led horrific communal violence in Bengal.
While places like Noakhali witnessed large-scale massacres and atrocities against Hindus, Bihar turned red in Anti-Muslim violence.
Although the proponents of United Bengal tried, their proposals were outrightly ignored by Mountbatten, Congress and Muslim League.
They were also ignored by most of the Hindus in Bengal who were in support of partition. In-fact Caste Hindus started immigration towards west from east Bengal much before partition. Many had already properties shifted to Calcutta.
When Bengal Assembly voted for Partition SP Mookherjee was only one among the 250 with no special seperate demand. 🤡
Partition had, by then, become almost inevitable. Except for Gandhi, virtually every major political formation had reconciled itself to it, including Patel, who accepted the reality much earlier.
The rest merely waited for Gandhi to finally relent. And Gandhi, hapless, gave up.
So, what special in SP Mookherjee?
For 16 years, a random dude from Rosario made my life a bit more beautiful and a bit more enjoyable by simply kicking a football for 90 minutes. It's strange knowing this journey is almost over. Always grateful for the memories, Leo.
India should make three-child families socially and economically possible, especially if the country wants to keep fertility above dangerously low levels.
Again, looking at stats when the ground reality sucks for the majority is very intelligent indeed. Such policies increase the suffering of the poor, especially burdening women because they don’t have a choice. Come out of your castle and look around.
If I had Musk's trillion, I'd actually spend it on something useful, like developing reusable rockets to make space travel cheap instead of just hoarding it all.
Buses will neither solve the problem of connectivity nor will it bring down congestion of Autos unless they start from Sonarpur & Baruipur and are frequent.
(Buses running with 15 or 30 minute intervals are meaningless).
Add to it his refusal to rehabilitate refugees respectably and refusal to engage in and even undo population exchange. Man had a serious hatred for Bengalis and all the problems faced by West Bengal are downstream of that. This is what jokers who say how long will you blame Nehru for miss.
By that logic, why Arvind Kejriwal gov was criticized in Delhi for same 'Freebies' when Delhi was running in surplus & still had least Debt to GSDP ratio !!
Why everyone associated with BJP & its govs are so full of hypocrisy & without logic ?
