Please help me honor Senior Chief Collin Thomas, DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6), killed in Afghanistan on August 18, 2010, age 33.
Born in Santee, California, he spent his youth moving through six different schools across two countries and five states until Morehead, Kentucky finally offered him a lasting sense of home.
Rather than accept a full ROTC scholarship, he chose to enlist in the Navy, serving first as a Corpsman before entering BUD/S and graduating with Class 219. He pinned on his Trident on June 9, 2000, then deployed with UNITAS throughout Central and South America.
In the wake of 9/11 he transferred to SEAL Team Two and saw combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan. By 2006 he had finished the second phase of 18-Delta training and joined the Navy’s premier assault force, DEVGRU, where those who served with him remembered him as an exceptionally skilled and effective operator.
His posthumous Silver Star citation captures the kind of leader he was. Serving as assistant team leader, he responded to RPG fire by directing his assault force straight at two barricaded enemy fighters inside the objective building.
Earlier, between July 2008 and June 2009, he had already earned two Bronze Stars with Valor, one for rapidly forming and leading a team into the lower level of an enemy stronghold, clearing heavily armed fighters in close quarters combat, and personally securing the site so a wounded teammate could receive care.
He is survived by his parents, retired Marine Lt. Col. Clayton Thomas and Paula, his sister Meghan, his fiancée Sarah, and his dog Hagan, “the monster dog," a small detail that reveals the man behind the awards.
Across 13 years in the Navy, his record was defined by the same instinct: when the situation turned critical, he led from the front.
