One morning in junior college, my phone woke me up.
I answered half asleep.
It was a D2 coach from the Midwest.
A school I had never talked to.
Never emailed.
Never DM’d.
Never saw follow me on X.
I did not even know they knew my name.
Then he told me they were offering me.
He said they had been watching me for months.
Another school told me something similar.
I was talking to one of their coaches in November.
And he told me I had been on their board since January.
January.
I had no clue.
That is one of the weirdest parts of recruiting.
You can feel like nothing is happening.
No calls.
No DMs.
No emails.
No obvious interest.
But behind the scenes, your name might be getting brought up.
A coach may have watched your film.
A coach may have talked to your coach.
A coach may have added you to a board.
A coach may be waiting to see your next few games.
And you won't know about it all.
That is why recruiting can mess with your head.
Because from your side, it looks quiet.
But quiet does not always mean nothing is happening.
Sometimes it means you are being evaluated and you just do not know it yet.
I have seen this happen to me.
I have seen it happen to teammates.
And I have seen it happen with families we work with.
A player feels like nothing is moving.
Then one coach reaches out.
Then another coach calls.
Then another school offers.
And all of a sudden, it looks like everything happened at once.
But it usually did not happen at once.
The work was happening before anyone saw it.
That is the part most families miss.
You do not magically end up on recruiting boards.
You get there by making sure coaches know who you are.
Your film has to get in front of them.
Your profile has to be easy to read.
Your strengths have to be clear.
Your grad year has to be clear.
Your measurables have to be easy to find.
Your academics need to be included.
Your name has to keep showing up enough for the coach to remember it.
That is how you give yourself a chance to get on the board.
Then the next job is to give them a reason to move you up.
Better film.
Better games.
Better follow-up.
Better exposure.
More proof that you fit what they need.
Because being on the board is not the same as being offered.
It just means you are in the conversation.
And that is where recruiting starts.
Most recruits are waiting for a coach to make it obvious.
But a lot of the process is not obvious.
You may not know who watched your film.
You may not know who brought your name up in a meeting.
You may not know which coach is one more good game away from calling.
So control what you can control.
Get your information in front of the right schools.
Make it easy for them to evaluate you.
Keep giving them reasons to pay attention.
Because you never know which board your name is already on.
