Modi looks like he's on his way out.

A few days ago, Modi announced that India's GDP growth for the second quarter was 7.8%. This is the same nationalist narrative he's been peddling for the past decade to boost Indian pride, but this time it didn't work. Social media was overwhelmingly flooded with mockery and disbelief over the numbers. A former Indian official even came out and said that Modi had manipulated the statistical methodology, and that India's real GDP growth was only 2.6%.

Modi has presided over what should have been India's golden opportunity—the U.S.-China rivalry, a once-in-a-century shift. But he handled it disastrously. Strategically, it's been a colossal failure, planting extremely damaging seeds for India's next few decades.

On the American front, Modi failed to secure any real Western investment or technology transfers. Western multinationals looking to move out of China should have seen India as a natural destination—but only very few of that materialized. Meanwhile, across Western societies, anti-Indian sentiment has reached a centuries-high. Indians have become synonymous with filth and immorality in the Western public imagination, and this grassroots animosity has effectively ruled out any deep future cooperation.

On the Chinese front, Modi has been equally inept. Before 2018, Chinese companies like Xiaomi helped transfer the smartphone industry to India, effectively building India's mobile phone sector from the ground up. But that window has slammed shut. Chinese capital and technology will now be tightly controlled. More importantly, Chinese society as a whole has woken up to India's deep-seated hostility and has become wary of its rise. For decades to come, Chinese people will be watching India with a wary eye, which also ruled out any deep future cooperation.

India could have done so much better. But Modi's brand of hyper-nationalist governance has brought out the worst in his countrymen—their cheapness, ignorance, and arrogance—and put it on full display for the whole world to see. Modi has completely botched it.
