π¨π°πUNESCO-Listed Preah Vihear Temple Shows Extensive Damage After Ceasefire
The temple, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, sustained extensive damage across nearly all areas, from the first to the fifth gopura and the ancient staircase.

According to the Cambodian Interior Ministry, during border clashes, Thai armed forces cut the locks of Cambodian civilian homes in Sangkum Thmei village, Pursat province, and seized four motorcycles and two village garbage carts.
Preah Vihear Temple has been destroyed by Thai shelling during this new round of fighting between Cambodia and Thailand.
A UNESCO World Heritage site has been lost. This is not collateral damage. It is the destruction of irreplaceable cultural heritage during an active conflict.

It has been 148 days since 18 Cambodian soldiers were captured under the captivity of the Thai military.
Cambodia urgently calls on the Thai side to strictly, honestly, and in good faith uphold the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, particularly paragraph 5, which clearly states that
βThe Thai side must promptly release the 18 Cambodian soldiersβ Cambodia also urges Thailand to respect and fulfill all obligations under international law, especially international humanitarian law, by releasing the Cambodian soldiers as soon as possible so that they may be safely reunited with their families.
It must also be underscored that the Royal Government of Cambodia has been and will continue to make relentless efforts, utilizing all available mechanisms for the Thai military to release and repatriate our 18 soldiers as promptly and safely as possible.
The Royal Government, the Ministry of National Defence, and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces will never abandon any of our troops under any circumstances.

Press briefing: "The updated situation of the Cambodia-Thailand border after the Thai military launched attacks on Cambodian military and civilians" on the morning of December 23, 2025.

On December 19, 2025, the Thai military conducted a series of deliberate airstrikes by F-16 Fighter Jet targeting the O Jik Bridge, a civilian infrastructure, located in Srei Snam District, Siem Reap Province bordering Chong Kal District, Oddar Meanchey Province:
Timeline of Airstrikes:
- 10:55 pm, First F-16 strike 1 bomb was dropped.
- 11:00 pm, Second F-16 strike 1 bomb was dropped.
- 11:10 pm, Third F-16 strike 1 bomb was dropped.
These strikes occurred deep within Cambodian sovereign territory and mark the second time the O Jik Bridge has been targeted, following a previous F-16 attack on December 15, 2025. These actions constitute a reckless and indiscriminate assault on non-military targets. Given the bridge's proximity to displaced civilian camps and essential infrastructure, these strikes represent a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law, specifically the principle of distinction, which mandates the protection of civilians and civilian objects during armed conflict.

The Thai armed aggression has caused serious damage. As of December 16, 2025, the toll includes 17 civilian fatalities (including one infant) and 77 civilian injuries.
In this sense, Cambodia calls on the international community to strongly condemn Thailand's violations of the Joint Declaration and its repeated war crime and unlawful activities, as well as demands that Thailand take full responsibility for such brazen violations.
Cambodia urges that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activities and withdraw its forces from Cambodia's territorial integrity, and avoid acts of aggression that threaten peace and stability in the region. At the same time, we call on the Thai side to firmly honour the Ceasefire Agreement, the Joint Declaration, as well as the obligations under international law with sincerity, in good faith and goodwill.

[Op-Ed] I first walked among the Temples of Preah Vihear, Ta Krabei and Ta Mone in the aftermath of the July 2008 hostilities. The air was still β silent not from abandonment but from endurance. These were stones that had outlived kingdoms and conflicts, standing as steadfast guardians of memory, art, faith and civilisation. To see those same protected temples now struck by heavy weapons is not merely to register a breach of law; it is to feel a wound cut into the heart of Cambodia and into the moral fabric of humanity itself. To wound these temples is, in truth, to wound humanity.
