I told her I couldn’t do it.

She looked confused.

“Why? You literally told me you have enough.”

That sentence stayed with me.

I asked her why my savings suddenly had anything to do with what she wanted.

She said,

“I just thought we were serious enough that money wouldn’t be so separate.”

We weren’t married.

We didn’t live together.

We didn’t share finances.

But somehow, after I told her exactly what I had, she started treating my money like something she had a claim to.

After that, I noticed the little comments.

“You can afford it.”

“Why are you worried about the price?”

“You have savings.”

Maybe she wasn’t dating me for money.

But something had changed.

She no longer saw my financial situation as private.

That’s when I learned something I probably should have understood earlier.

Being honest with someone you’re dating doesn’t mean giving them your entire financial picture.

I updated my name on my BVN, all the banks expect me to come physically to change my name at their branch but on my OPay they just needed me to click a button on the app, they checked my bvn and updated it themselves.
