This is now the fifth year we are publishing the Fantasy Romance / Romantasy report.
After each edition, I received messages asking: “What if I missed the boat? Isn’t this just another fad that will end soon?”
It is not.
Major studios continue to invest heavily in TV and film adaptations of bestsellers in the genre:
Most of these projects are still in early development. Releases are unlikely before 2027 or even 2028. That is exactly what makes this powerful. The publicity wave is already queued up and will continue to drive future demand for romantasy books.
Of course, not every project will make it to production. The A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation at Hulu did not move forward. The rights have reverted to Sarah J. Maas. In my view, she is unlikely to sit on them for long, especially as ACOTAR 6 and 7 have recently crushed the Kindle bestseller charts on pre-orders alone.
At the same time, capital is moving into the space. For example, the investment firm The Chernin Group backed Entangled Publishing, the parent company of Red Tower Books, the publisher of Fourth Wing, at a $400 million valuation.
But money alone is not enough. What these firms and publishers are competing for is high-quality intellectual property with commercial potential. And that sits with you, the writers.
More often than not, it is indie authors with viral reach and market-tested stories who have driven romantasy’s explosive growth.
And step one is always the same: you must strike a chord with readers. To accomplish that, you need to understand what sells.
That's why I'm thrilled to announce the release of our latest genre research:
The K-lytics Fantasy Romance Report 2026 (+ Video)
We packed this report with valuable insights and data-driven analysis to help you take your writing and marketing in this genre to the next level.

e-book market intelligence for success
Six Mafia Romance titles among the Top 100 Most Sold Kindle titles this year. A similar achievement as in the last two years.
Not a fluke.
Not a one-off.
When a trope shows up this consistently at the very top, it’s no longer a niche. It’s a market signal.
Curious how many authors quietly ignore signals like this? #amwrting #writerscommunity #authors

AFTER FOUR YEARS OF POST-PANDEMIC DECLINE, COZY MYSTERY IS BACK!
For the first time since 2021, the steady rise in search interest for "cozy mystery books" is finally translating into a genuine sales-rank rebound for the category.
■ Netflix as a Genre Amplifier ■
While critics have been divided on Netflix’s movie adaptation of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club, it accumulated 24.7 million views in its first week, made the Top 10 in 91 countries, and was the #1 movie in 31 countries.
Now guess what happened to Richard Osman’s book sales?
But the good news is that the rise in cozy mystery sales ranks started before the movie buzz. So Netflix may be more a catalyst than the root cause.
And hopefully we’ll see another push for the genre through Daniel Craig’s return as Benoit Blanc in Wake Up Dead Man. The third installment in the Knives Out franchise—this time featuring Glenn Close and Josh Brolin, among other A-list stars—will stream on Netflix in December.
■ Genre Rejuvenation ■
But it’s not only the cozy category sales that have seen a refresh. We finally see some movement—perhaps even a shake-up—in the genre. Fresh takes on cover art, stories trailing the Murder Club phenomenon, some new authors we haven’t seen before, and more.
■ Indie Authors Uniquely Positioned ■
Indie authors have a unique opportunity to capitalize on these trends: over 70% of authors in our Cozy Mystery rankings are indies. But competition is fierce, as the Cozy Mystery genre has transformed from a niche into a major force in the mainstream book market.
This is where you need a clear view of the market, the competition, and what sells—and our research provides precisely that.
If you’re ready to see where the market is moving and how to position your next book accordingly, get this new research today:
■ K-lytics Cozy Mystery Seminar 2025 ■

Amazon’s Kindle Translate and the AI Translation Boom
As an indie author, you’ve poured your heart into crafting stories that resonate with readers. But what if language barriers are keeping your books from reaching millions more?
On November 6, 2025, Amazon unveiled a potential game-changer: Kindle Translate, an AI-powered tool designed to help self-published authors expand their global footprint. During the current beta it’s available to a limited group of KDP authors and is free for those invited.
Unveiling Kindle Translate: Amazon’s Bold Move into AI Translation
What Amazon says is live right now: Kindle Translate lets invited KDP authors request AI translations inside the KDP dashboard. At launch, supported directions are English ↔ Spanish and German → English.
Authors can select languages, set prices, preview translations, and publish once Amazon’s automated checks are complete (Amazon says this can be “within a few days”). Translated books display a visible Kindle Translate label and remain eligible for KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited. Amazon also highlights that fewer than 5% of Amazon titles are available in more than one language, underscoring the growth opportunity. Sources: Amazon announcement, The Verge, Engadget.
Important scope note: Media coverage and Amazon’s page confirm the language directions above; outlets also report that additional languages are planned, but not yet available at the time of writing.
The State of AI Translation for Fiction Novels in 2025: Progress Amid Challenges
AI translation quality has improved markedly, but long-form, voice-driven fiction remains hard. Idioms, humor, register, and cultural subtext still require careful review. As a result, the most reliable approach for novels in 2025 is a hybrid workflow: machine translation for a fast draft, followed by a native-language editorial pass to refine tone, dialogue, and continuity.
Professional platforms used in creative localization—such as ModernMT (Translated) and Lilt—explicitly support “human-in-the-loop” editing so systems adapt to corrections over time.Industry experiments: In the academic sphere, Taylor & Francis and trade press like Publishers Weekly report AI-assisted translation programs (with human review) to bring more titles into English. In consumer publishing, trials are ongoing and opinions remain mixed about literary quality and ethics. See also The Guardian on VBK’s trial.
Benchmarking Kindle Translate Against Other Solutions
To contextualize Kindle Translate, here’s a neutral look at some indie-relevant tools (features summarized from public pages):Kindle Translate (beta) — Integrated with KDP; currently English ↔ Spanish and German → English; labeled in store; beta access only; free for invitees; KU/Select-eligible. Sources: Amazon, The Verge.
ScribeShadow — Author-facing web app where you upload a manuscript and manage translation/review in a dashboard. Public portal: https://t.co/1NOGYaaPZX. (Pricing/details require login.)
https://t.co/SNqvOqBSdc — Launched mid-2025; headline price $100 per language, per book with quick turnaround; widely discussed (supporters and critics). Sources: GlobeScribe, Multilingual, The Guardian.
OmniTranslate — Novel-focused tooling with claims of preserved cultural context and terminology; web and mobile entry points. Sources: https://t.co/sguPnGNMd0, https://t.co/yLmjql0gB2.
https://t.co/LwKxBTyYtQ — Low-cost ePub translation with posted rates from $5.99 per 100,000 words (token-based estimate). Sources: https://t.co/rQj8A51pcd, pricing blog.
O.Translator — Document→eBook pipeline (EPUB/PDF/DOCX) with layout preservation and preview. Source:
.
ModernMT / Lilt — Pro editor-in-the-loop platforms; strongest where voice fidelity is critical and you can budget for a native fiction editor. Sources: ModernMT, Lilt.
Notes on claims and neutrality: Some marketing pages mention multi-model backends or “publish-ready” quality; these are vendor claims and can vary by book and language pair. We recommend treating any AI output (including Kindle Translate) as a draft and scheduling a native-language editorial pass before release.
Early Social Media & Press Sentiment: Excitement Tempered by Skepticism
Coverage from tech and book media has been cautiously positive about Kindle Translate’s potential to expand reach, while underscoring the importance of quality for fiction. Social posts since launch largely share the news and speculate about opportunities; many authors plan controlled tests. Concerns mirror broader AI debates: loss of nuance, idioms, or voice if books are published without editorial review.
Why This Matters for Indie Authors: Opportunities and Next Steps
Opportunities: Lower cost and faster turnaround make it feasible to try additional markets (e.g., EN→ES) for backlist titles. Kindle Translate reduces publishing friction; third-party tools offer broader language coverage or specialized workflows.
Bottom line: Kindle Translate meaningfully lowers the barrier to multilingual publishing within KDP. Third-party services (ScribeShadow, GlobeScribe, OmniTranslate, BookTranslator ai, O.Translator) and pro editor-in-the-loop platforms (ModernMT/Lilt) provide alternative paths.
For fiction, a hybrid approach—machine draft plus native editorial review—remains the safest way to balance speed, cost, and voice fidelity.
But always remember, quality is in the eye of the beholder: the reader.
A translate-to-market approach will consider the quality standards of the target audience.
What your experience with the new Kindle Translate Service?
Authors & publishers, take note: One of the rare glimpses into Amazon's ebook empire? The Kindle Select Global Fund—royalties for KU exclusives, a key bellwether for the broader digital market.
Our 2025 forecast? A projected $742M total, up +9.6% from 2024's $677M. Monthly payouts have hovered steady at $61-63M, but that's no slump—it's resilience in a tricky economy, cooling from last year's 16% surge but still a win for creators.

Paranormal Romance is growing again in the tailwind of Romantasy — and hardly anyone has noticed.
No doubt, the boundaries between Paranormal Romance, Romantasy, and Urban Fantasy Romance have become increasingly blurred. In today’s market, the label often says more about positioning than about the story itself.
Search interest for Romantasy may now dominate the headlines, but Paranormal Romance has benefited from the same cultural and commercial tailwind.
In fact, while many authors are chasing the epic-fantasy side of the trend, Paranormal Romance is quietly regaining strength in its core space — where love, danger, and the supernatural meet modern reality.
On Amazon, the leading Paranormal Romance bestseller lists show a clear upward trend again after the post-pandemic dip. Readers are returning to familiar PNR foundations — shapeshifters, vampires, alphas, and fated mates — but with refreshed tropes, faster pacing, and a more contemporary tone.
The Paranormal Romance Report & Seminar 2025
Our new K-lytics Paranormal Romance 2025 Report explores these shifts in detail — from the evolving category landscape and high-performing tropes to the influence of Romantasy crossover titles and the emerging opportunities for indie authors.
For established writers and emerging talents alike, there is one vital element to market success: Step 1 — Know the Market. And that is where our market intel has you covered.

Once thought of as a niche or cult corner of fiction, horror is back with a vengeance.
From Slump to Resurgence
During the pandemic years, darker genres took a dive — dystopian, apocalyptic, horror — you name it. Escapist and non-triggering fiction surged instead, as seen in the rise of “cozy fantasy.” Romance was the odd one out, with darker themes thriving nevertheless.
Despite a Fear-Saturated News Cycle
Counterintuitively, despite today’s conflict-driven, fear-saturated news cycle, one of the darkest genres has made a remarkable comeback — this time with fresh ideas, cross-genre energy and new creative directions.
Timeline of a Comeback
The first signs of a horror renaissance appeared in 2023. In the U.S., Circana BookScan reported a 24.2% spike in horror book sales.
In the U.K., The Bookseller, citing Nielsen data, noted that sales of horror and ghost stories rose by 54% in value to £7.7 million — the strongest year on record for the genre.
2024 continued the trend with double-digit growth across both geographies.
In 2025, the cross-media cultural tailwind is unmistakable. Horror box office revenues have blown past $1 billion in 2025, led by The Conjuring: Last Rites and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, both pulling fresh audiences back to the page.
Overall, Google search interest for “horror books” is up more than 70% between 2020 and 2025.
Hidden in Plain Sight on Kindle
The re-emergence of horror on Kindle was somewhat hidden. Titles were scattered across Literature & Fiction, Mystery, Thriller & Suspense (MTS), and Sci-Fi & Fantasy.
The main Horror category showed strong growth — but much of it came from dark romance and dark fantasy. Meanwhile, “classic” horror fiction, horror suspense, and psychological thrillers found their footing again in the MTS ecosystem. Here, the horror bestseller ranks show a clear upward trend.
A Wide Range of Opportunities
Horror today spans a broad spectrum — from tight psychological dread to survival and apocalyptic horror, to cosmic, techno, gothic, and supernatural chills.
Readers crave fear in all its forms — and the market is rewarding authors who deliver it with focus and precision. To do that, you need solid market intelligence.

I am happy to announce the Fall 2025 Edition of our semi-annual Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Genre Report.
Genre Category Map – Now Covering 167 Mystery Thriller & Suspense Kindle Categories
Our new report is a treasure trove of insights, offering a comprehensive overview of the genre’s performance and a detailed data breakdown of all 167 MTS categories, including Level-4 and Level-5 sub-categories.
Cozy Mystery authors may have noticed that Amazon introduced a new cozy mystery sub-category: “Books, Bookstores & Libraries.” This addition is now reflected in the data.
As always, the report highlights the MTS categories that have shown the most significant upward or downward trend in the last 12 months.
Sales Trending Up Again
MTS is a top-performing genre on Amazon. It ranks #2 after romance but shows a more cyclical performance than romance.
The average sales rank of the Top 100 MTS titles has been trending slightly upward over the last six months. It seems we are entering an upward cycle again in MTS, and the launch of Dan Brown's #TheSecretOfSecrets has clearly shifted some of the limelight away from the ubiquitous romance titles towards the mystery/thriller genre.
Mystery, thriller, suspense, and crime novels have captured a 30% market share among the 100 best-selling Kindle books of 2025 so far — and that’s excluding romantic suspense titles.
In a competitive market, access to transparent and reliable data is essential — and that’s exactly what K-lytics delivers:
New Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Report (Fall Edition)
As always, you’ll gain insights into sales development, book supply, the best-performing categories, high-selling covers, leading authors and publishers, trending keywords, optimal price points, effective titles, compelling book descriptions, and more.
In addition to the main genre report and video, you’ll also find a Top 100 Market Snapshot bonus report and my detailed commentary in the seminar video.
